Two questions, do you have and are you using Outlook as your email client.

If "no" then we need go no further but I assume you have got it as Windows Update should not be downloading an update for it if it is not installed.

If "yes" then click Start and copy and paste this command into the search box and hit Enter.

    %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log

Copy and paste the last 50 lines (approximately) of the report into the next post.

This might reveal what is going wrong, if not, then there is a possibility you have Malware that is corrupting the updates so using our Malware and Virus forum will be the next step.

One other solution is to try and borrow a copy of the Windows 7 CD (it must be the same version as your installation) to run a repair install.

The very last solution I can think of is to run a full recovery of your system. That is assuming you have a recovery partition on your PC.

I copied the entire file. Yes, I am using OFFICE 2007. I hope this gives you what you need to save me.

I really do not like reinstalling the operating system.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E5-F083-4819-9771-4F0892B1B3CA&displaylang=en

These two links go to the manual downloads for the two updates. Try downloading and installing one at a time.

Just to be sure, switch off your firewall and any anti virus during the download.

Unfortunately the WU log doesn't go back far enough to see what was happening when the downloads failed, if the above manual downloads do not work post the last 100 lines.

Markmadras, I don't know if I mentioned this, but when I try to download the updates I am told they already exist. I have tried to delete them, but I can't locate them on my system. Have I made things hard by keeping my little secret? I should have mentioned it before, I am sorry! How can I delete the updates from my system?

OK, not a problem, there are three places to look.

Go to Control Panel>Windows Update and look in> "View Update History" and "Restore Hidden Updates ", both are in the left pane.

You can also look in Control Panel>Programs and Features.

If you find the downloads delete them, if you can, then download manually from the links I gave in my last post.

Let me know what you find.

Hi, I tried both approaches to find the failed updates. I couldn't find either of the updates. There was nothing in Hidden Updates, or Programs and Features. I tried downloading KB2412171 and received the same message, updates already installed on the PC. I am sorry to say the ball is back in your court.

The details of that update (KB2412171) are given here ....

Description of the Office Outlook 2007 update: January 11, 2011

A list of the files incorporated in the update are shown under the heading ......

Compare them with those on your computer.

I clicked on the link in post 27, your latest. I went to "How to determine whether the update is installed." Then I selected CONTAB32.DLL, GLDSETD.DLL, DUMPSTER.DLL, and SCNPST64.DLL, from the list. I went to Start Menu and entered each of DLLs I selected. None of them were shown as being on the PC. Was using Start Menu the correct way to look for the DLLs?

Probably not as the search function requires the C:\ drive to be indexed - I don't think it is by default. Certainly not on my Win 7 install, but I may have altered it.

Type Outlook.exe in the Search Box - you should get a single result - Outlook.exe. Run your mouse cursor over to reveal the details and check the version no.

Location of the first 2 .dll's in the list .....

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\CNFNOT32.EXE

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\CONTAB32.DLL

    and Outlook.exe .....

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE

Right click on the file > Properties - Details tab to see the version number and compare with the list in the MS KB.

If you are running 32 bit Windows 7 (mine is x64) the path will be .....

    C:\Program Files\....

I looked at KB2483110 and found only one item in the update. I looked for it and did not find it on my PC.

You asked about my other two issues they are:

Folders (?) from the right side of the Start Menu are gone. I lost about six folders. The only ones I can remember are, Control Panel and Devices and Printers.

DVDs and my Television tuner don't work. The tuner card is Pinnacle TVCenter PC (800i). I tried the DVDs on a DVD player and my wife's (Win7) laptop and they all worked correctly.

There some other items, but they are just an annoyance and should not be addressed at this time.

The Outlook Junk Mail file should be here ....

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLFLTR.DAT

For win 7 32 bit it will be in plain Program Files.

There should be a previous version of the file there, if not the current one.

You haven't responded to my last post regarding the other Outlook update files.

You've not mentioned it, unless I missed it, but would you confirm that Outlook is installed and that you are using it?

Pete, I am sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I just regressed to my normal state, confused and bewildered.

I hope the following information is of help in fixing MY problem:
    Outlook.exe. version no. = 12.0.6550.5003
    CNFNOT32.EXE version no. = 12.0.6501.5000
    CONTAB32.DLL version no. = 12.0.6514.5000

    I am running 64 bit Windows 7.

The file versions you list are the current versions provided by the 'failed' update so there is no real concern there - the fact that they do not apparently show up in the normal locations is a mystery, but not one I would lose sleep over:)

The other problems you mention - somewhat late in the day - may be contributing to this issue and are of equal concern.

These should be dealt with in a new thread in which you must give a detailled list of the problems and details of your system ......

To save time we also need to know if you have a retail Windows 7 installation DVD, a REcovery DVD or a Recovery Partition on the computer.

Pete, thanks for the good news! I'll create two new thread today, and complete my system profile. Currently the system is having a problem linking.

Pete, you and Markmadras have demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of the Win 7 system, and a willingness and ability to share
this knowledge with neophytes like myself.

    THANK YOU!!!
