    Access the adapter settings and:

    1. uninstall QoS
    2. uncheck IP6 (it's not needed yet)
    3. double-click TCP IP4 > Advanced button > Wins tab > uncheck LMHosts & set radio button "use netbios over TCP/IP ".
    4. set to obtain an IP address & DNS server automatically.

If use Internet Explorer, do Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN settings button > uncheck everything.

    Hi TonyT,

Thanks I followed your instructions to the letter however I use Mozila Firefox so did not make any adjustments there.

    I was hopefull!!!

I booted up this morning and same problem, no internet connection. So I disconnected ethernet port, re-connected and a couple of moments was away again. Is it worth re-installing the ethernet adaptor software?

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi, Thanks for your suggestion. The modem/router works fine on other computers in the house and rather than spend further money I would like to find out how to solve this problem.

Reinstalling the adapter won't result in a fix because it does work...sometimes. Adapters either work or they don't, no in-between.

Let's verify that FF is not the problem.

Next time FF won't connect, open a command prompt and type:
    Code:
    ping www.yahoo.com
If you get responses then the Internet works and FF is broke.

    Hi TonyT,
It didn't connect this morning so I disconnected ethernet port and connected again - 90% usual ritual. I then pinged 127.0.0.1 and got a reply, pinged myself 192.168.1.230 and got a reply, pinged router 192.168.1.1 and got a reply, then pinged www.yahoo.com and it replied "could not find host yahoo.com" so it seems it's something to do with the name resolution??? Whats next??

Hi SpywareDR, I tried pinging the 209.191.122.70 and it came back generally failed, same with my router, although ping 127.0.0.1 got the lopback. I checked Ipconfig and no entry in DNS, none in Gateway and media state disconnected. IPv4 and subnet mask showed addresses. I ran trouble shooting in network diagnostics and it fixed it saying local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration. Then I pinged 209.191.122.70 again and had 75% loss same with www.yahoo.com, but lopback worked. I did an IP release and renew and now it's all working fine - at the moment. When should I try the DNS changes?

    Answer these Q's:

    1. type of Internet: DSL, FIOS, Cable?
    2. brand, model of modem?
    3. brand, model of router?

It's quite possible your modem is also a router and you are using "double NAT ".

Hi TonyT, internet is ADSL, Model is Dynalink RTA1025W which is a modem router combination. I checked for NAT and couldn't find it in any tabs or dropdowns when I accessed the modem.

There will be a setting in the modem for "always on" or "dial on demand ". Set to "always on ".

Is it connected by USB or Ethernet cable? Best to use Ethernet instead of USB.

Hi TonyT, I don't seem to have NAT listed in the routermodem options, not sure why. Anway we seem to be up and running ever since I put the suggestions from hacker into the adapter DSN 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. No idea why but it seems to be OK now with these settings in place.

From time to time I am unable to access a connection to my ISP and several times on checking reasons, find that the ISP is experiencing trouble with their lines and that their engineers are working on to trace the fault. Worth checking if all fails.

Ahh sorry Doc, you know that time of year and trying to get many things finished a things get crossed over in your mind. Much appreciated, your fix worked. Although I don't know why. One day if the problem arrises again or if I feel I need to sort it out over XMAS on a rainy day I might push a little further. Thanks again have a good XMAS and New Year.

And if multiple computers on the network ever have similar issues resolving host names, you can manually set the DNS server IP to that of the router (192,168.x.x) and then change the DNS server addresses in the router itself.
