Hi, I have a brand new desktop machine with Windows7 installed. After boot-up I go to use Firefox browser and find no internet connection. I disconnect the ethernet cable and plug it back in and a moment later I have internet connection. I jiggle the plug and lead and it does not drop out. It stays connected during the session. When I shut-down and then re-boot no internet connection!!. Is this a DNS issue or what can anyone suggest?. I fix things myself so taking back to the shop is not an option.

Something running during startup could be setting a IP address or say, a proxy server. It could be malware, so if you are thinking along those lines, start a thread in the Malware forum, but read the instructions at the head of that forum.

When you disconnect and then reconnect the cable, Windows resets the IP address. Check your IP address before and after the reconnection.

As I said, something might be imposing the settings for a proxy server. Your ISP might require a proxy server, so you might need to read their setup instructions (do they have an installation program?) You can contact their support.

There are standard LAN cables and Cross-Over LAN cables (that I have dealt with). If you are not sure, try getting another cable to try.

After bootup, run this command: cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$ an copy the output in your next reply.

Are you booting the modem/router at the same time as you boot the system?

Could be your PC is asking for an IP before the router is ready to issue one.

Do you shut down the router and modem when you are closing down for the day? I run Windows 7 on a new machine and have no problems, but then my modem and router are always on. The Malware is a good lead as well. Good luck!

Hi CSCA, That was what I was suggesting and I believe it may be one of the things Arie was trying to confirm. However until we get some feedback from warpy55 there's probably no point in furthering this thread.

    Hi Arie,

I checked ip address when I logged on and had no connection and it came up with 192.168.1.56 (Preferred). I then ran above program twice. I think the first run there was no connection, the second run (as I had a space before all) I found I had a connection. Here are the two files labeled 1 and 2.

Error: unrecognized or incomplete command line.

    USAGE:
    ipconfig [/allcompartments] [/? | /all |
    /renew [adapter] | /release [adapter] |
    /renew6 [adapter] | /release6 [adapter] |
    /flushdns | /displaydns | /registerdns |
    /showclassid adapter |
    /setclassid adapter [classid] |
    /showclassid6 adapter |
    /setclassid6 adapter [classid] ]

    where
    adapter Connection name
(wildcard characters * and ? allowed, see examples)

    Options:
    /? Display this help message
    /all Display full configuration information.
/release Release the IPv4 address for the specified adapter.
/release6 Release the IPv6 address for the specified adapter.
/renew Renew the IPv4 address for the specified adapter.
/renew6 Renew the IPv6 address for the specified adapter.
/flushdns Purges the DNS Resolver cache.
/registerdns Refreshes all DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names
/displaydns Display the contents of the DNS Resolver Cache.
/showclassid Displays all the dhcp class IDs allowed for adapter.
/setclassid Modifies the dhcp class id.
/showclassid6 Displays all the IPv6 DHCP class IDs allowed for adapter.
/setclassid6 Modifies the IPv6 DHCP class id.

The default is to display only the IP address, subnet mask and
default gateway for each adapter bound to TCP/IP.

For Release and Renew, if no adapter name is specified, then the IP address
leases for all adapters bound to TCP/IP will be released or renewed.

For Setclassid and Setclassid6, if no ClassId is specified, then the ClassId is removed.

    Examples:
    > ipconfig ... Show information
    > ipconfig /all ... Show detailed information
    > ipconfig /renew ... renew all adapters
    > ipconfig /renew EL* ... renew any connection that has its
    name starting with EL
    > ipconfig /release *Con* ... release all matching connections,
eg. "Local Area Connection 1" or
    "Local Area Connection 2 "
    > ipconfig /allcompartments ... Show information about all

You should not have to jiggle the plug and lead.

    Hi lj50,

I agree I only jiggled the lead after it connected to see if it would drop out but it didn't.
    regards Paul

I have no idea. You'll probably have to wait a little longer before 1st trying to connect.

If this only started happening recently, I suggest you try to do a system restore prior to the problem starting.

I assembled a new computer with an Asus mb and Intel i5 chip w/ win7 home installed. Was working fine for about a month and then there were times when I would boot up and not have access to the internet. Several other machines on my home network were fine. I dropped in a pci internet card and was back in business. Contacted Asus and they suggested changing the MB battery. Did that and the problem disappeared. Pulled the pci card a few days later and have been trouble free since. My VOM meter said the CR2032 battery was reading 2.8V.

    Try this

    Forget all that Rasspoe nonsense…
i had the same trouble after a windows update..
i set internet options for ipv4 and ipv6 to manual and entered the ip and dns addresses manually, and it didnt make any difference.
So here`s what to do.. and it takes a few minutes, and no experience required.

first turn power off and unplug all leads.
then remove the casing so you can see he motherboard.
remove the battery (looks like a watch battery)
then plug in monitor "“ keyboard and power lead and boot up.
you will get an error message stating that the pc cannot boot up, this is because the battery has been removed.

what you have actually now done is reset the bios.

turn off the pc and remove all leads again, and insert the battery again.
reboot pc after plugging all leads back into the pc.

go to the internet icon in the bottom right hand side of the screen and open network and sharing folder. click on the area (on the map of your pc to internet) and it will run a diagnostic check for you, and repair the fault.

    That's odd.
Would think DHCP Server would be the same as the DNS Server and Defalt Gateway (your router) 192.168.1.1

So wonder if always getting a proper IP address.

Go into network connections -properties - internet protocol(TCP/IP) -properties and see if: Obtain an IP address automatically is checked.

    ps
And check that DHCP is turned on in your router

Just noticed how old the original question was, 2 weeks - wow - this was a waste of a response - lol

Hi, I changed by DHCP to 192.168.1.1 and removed and replaced the battery and it hasn't fixed the problem. Man is this frustrating. I disconnected the ethernet port, re-connected it and it worked although sometimes it doesn't. I have three other computers that work fine on ethernet and WIFI and don't have a problem. It's got me baffled!!!

Hi Ephemarial, my earlier post was intended for Broady2852. In regards to your post I changed the DHCP server to 192.168.1.1 and made sure the DNS and default gateway were all 192.168.1.1. I checked both Internet Protocol 6 (TCP/IPv6) and 4 (TCP/IPv4) had IP address automatically checked and it was. Also checked DHCP was enabled on router and it was. I am still having the problem, it is very frustrating. I have to unplug the internet connection on the back of the computer and re-plug and sometimes, not all the time, I will get the connection. So what does this mean??

    No internet connection Win7

Hi, I have a new desktop computer and from day one the broadband internet connection does not establish itself. It is very frustrating, I boot up the computer and no internet connection. I have to unplug the ethernet port and plug it back in and most times it will connect. It is not the lead, I have tried another one. I don't want to take it back to the shop and have no computer for a week while they sort it out. I have removed the battery and then plugged it back in no change. I have two other computers in the house and they are working fine wirelessly. What is going wrong that makes me have to unplug the ethernet port to get a connection? It is extremely annoying. Can anyone help??
Are there any diagnostics I can try? I submitted this to WinBBs before and tried everything everyone suggested to no avail.

Open the network & sharing center & verify that the network is a "home" network and not "public ".

    Hi Tony,
Yes it is set at "home" not public. Any other ideas? What is the process the computer goes through when booting to set up the connection? Very frustrating!!!!
