    Hi, Tallin.
It seems that you are on the right track. It has now downloaded 27 updates, but appears to have become stuck on installing the tenth. I'll wait a while longer, though, before trying again.
Thanks for your help, and thanks to all others who have made suggestions. I'll get back later.
    Regards,
    Clyde.

    Hi Clyde,

That is good news. Very often the fix is the most simple of things as hopefully in this case. I would suggest you reboot if all do not download and install then try again.

Good luck, and do post back to let us know of your success.

    kind regards,

Thanks Tallin. I waited quite some time without further obvious progress, so stopped the installation, re-booted and returned to Windows update. This time it downloaded 47 updates - rather more than previously - but then it again became stuck on "Preparing to Install ". I'll once again wait longer until I take any further action.
    Regards,
    Clyde.

Another idea you may like to consider Clyde would be not to option too many at a time to download and install. In other words only put a tick alongside say 10 to 15. As there are so many take it slowly in 10 to 15 stages, rebooting between each time.

    kind regards,

    Thanks again, Tallin.
I'm trying that now - just the first 8, in fact, then if that goes all right, I'll try some more.
At present, it is "installing update 1 of 8" - although I note that it has already been at this for some time. But I'll be patient a while longer.
    Regards,
    Clyde.

    Tallin,
Thanks tremendously to all who contributed. Success at last! All updates downloaded and installed - well over 100 of them!
    Regards,
    Clyde.
