Resolved [Windows updates fail to install]

    I am using Windows 7. Windows updates tells me that there are 31 important updates available. When I click "Install updates" it first downloads them, then tells me "Failed 31 updates. The number of updates has been slowly increasing over the past couple of weeks. Any suggestions, please?

    Have you tried downloading and installing each update from the Microsoft Download center site and seeing if each one successfully installs?

    Thanks for the suggestion. All of the boxes were checked before the download began. There was no opportunity to see if they were still checked before installation.

    Sorry, I missed your post earlier. Yes, I previously tried that - with a 100% failure rate! But since further updates have been added since then, I'll retry, but without holding much hope of success.

    Did performing a clean boot help at all?

    If you click Start< Run and type eventvwr.msc and hit enter, expand the Windows Logs and go the System area. Look for any Windows Update errors that are recorded there and see if Event Viewer recorded the error message of the Windows Updates then post that message here.

    If that is too difficult to perform then click Start< Run and type windowsupdate.log and hit enter. Save the log on your desktop and attach the log file in your next reply so I can review it.

    Thanks for taking an interest. I tried running eventvwr.msc, but when I then went to the system area, there were over 28000 entries, which is a little overwhelming. It is easy to find ones about errors, but many of them seemed unrelated to windows update - e.g., "The LiveUpdate service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). "
    OR "Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' did not start correctly because CoCreateInstance(CLSID_UPnPDeviceFinder) encountered error '0x80070422'. Verify that the UPnPHost service is running and that the UPnPHost component of Windows is installed properly. "
    OR "The HomeGroup Provider service depends on the Function Discovery Provider Host service which failed to start because of the following error:
    The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "
    OR "The previous system shutdown at 6:30:36 PM on ‎28/‎03/‎2014 was unexpected. "
    OR "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. "
    OR "Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' did not start correctly because CoCreateInstance(CLSID_UPnPDeviceFinder) encountered error '0x80070422'. Verify that the UPnPHost service is running and that the UPnPHost component of Windows is installed properly. "
    And so it goes on. Much of this is geekspeak beyond me.
    I have saved the windowsupdate.log, but cannot see how to attach it to this. And I thought I was reasonably proficient with computers!

    To attach a file click the Go Advanced button when you are posting a reply on Windowsbbs. Then scroll down and click the Manage Attachments button. This will open a new tab where you can upload your file. Click the browse button and navigate to where you saved the Windows Update log file. Then click Open and click the Upload button to upload the file.

    Please note that Windowsbbs only allows text files with a max file size of 250 Kilobytes to be uploaded. Since you may not be able to upload the entire file please attach the log file with the last 100 or so lines of the log file.
