    Hello Arie,

    Earlier you posted -
"When you have the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log open, select File > Save As from the menu. Change the .log extension to .txt and save it to your desktop. "
My answer to that was -
"More problems. I did another scan and clicked on the File on the finished scan, chose 'Save As." When I went to the bottom Save As Type choices there were only Text Documents (*.docx) or All FIles (*.*) NO other choices. "

I am at fault here with my choice of the word "scan" I should have written "Log" My apologies.

I have no way to change the log to be saved into a .txt file.

    regards

Weird. Notepad not your default for .log files probably.

Run this command instead: notepad %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

  3. to hide this advert.

    Arie,
    THank you for your post.
When the opportunity to type in cat /dev/null>%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log I added your suggestion AFTER the backslash following "windir% ". I received this notification -
"File name, Directory name or volume (something) Label syntax is incorrect "

I now have two notebook logs and I am not able to choose .txt file on any of them

This is what you should do:

Enter notepad %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Search programs and files box on the start menu.

    Thanks Arie,
I did that, and I got a new log.
When I clicked Save As, the same old thing happened -there were only Text Documents (*.docx) or All FIles (*.*) NO other choices. "

    Choose the:
    All FIles (*.*)
    option.

Then save the file with a:
    .txt
    extension.

For example, you could name it:
    WindowsUpdate.txt

    ARIE,
I have received you post, thanks,
I would ask three questions please.
    1. This is to Back up my Registry - correct?
    2. I follow how to set a restore point.
3, Where it says 'on the select and restore point page, click the system checkpoint, on this list select the restore point area, click an entry named "Guided Help (Registry backup) etc.' Will this be the point that I have previously made by creating a restore point and actioning the details included after the "RUN" - %SystemRoot% etc? If so, OK. However, if not please give further instructions. (I have never "played" with the registry - yet!)

    Thanks

    Colinito

    Arnie,
I received a reply from Microsoft. I enclose that reply with my reports of each step below each item.

    Colin,
You may try to run the Windows 7 Performance troubleshooter and check if it helps.
My report:- “Nothing detected even with additional problems” (This check was done previously with the same result)

    Open the System Maintenance troubleshooter
    <<http://windows.microsoft.com/es-ES/windows7/Open-the-System-Maintenance-troubleshooter>>
My report:- “No changes or updates necessary” (This check was done previously with the same result)
Run the Windows 7 Update Troubleshooter.
My report:- Ran as Administrator :- “Online search for Updates ran successfully – restart Windows and check for Updates." – Did that and after a few minutes I received the Error 80073712
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order presented.
I.- Try CHKDSK/F command in order to repair file system issues.
My report:-I have already run the Check Disk facility, since this update problem occurred. I checked the Defrag: first – deemed not to have any fragmented files. [Did not run it again – it takes a long time and it is doubtful if any changes have happened since the last one!]

II.- The System Update Readiness Tool CheckSUR for Windows can correct some conditions that causə Windows Update error.
Depending on your Windows 7 architecture, download / install and run the System Update Readiness Tool -CheckSur <<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821>>
My report:- Following the instructions of this item, when I clicked “check for updates” I was taken to a list of updates to install. I installed them!! Then restarted my computer. I have NO IDEA what has happened to rectify the Update problem – all appears to be working now.

III.- Try executing SFC /SCANNOW command using these steps: to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
    <<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833>>
My reply:- Previously, I have done 3 of these and kept the latest one. I have not done another – as mentioned in the last reply, the update programme appears to have miraculously recommenced!

It appears that the problem is solved - HOW, is another question!

Thank you for your lengthy help and advice, it may be that something that I did under your instruction might have been at the bottom of the solving of the problem!

I shall mark this thread as "Solved. "

    Regards,

    Colinito.

Well, great news. You'd run this tool before without success, so nice that it worked this time.

    Thanks for posting back.

    Arie,
Excuse this "further" message, I would like your views on the following. As you may remember, I had been away for nearly 9 months and trying to download all my missing updates was when I discovered the problem.
I ran my Belarc Adviser after I had downloaded the updates that showed when the update service began working again. It showed the following data -(below)
I searched the Microsoft website for downloads, but was unable to find a list of updates, so I could not check if the ones in the list, that I paste here, were available to download or how that should be done.
Is it your opinion that even though they are noted as "Critical" "Important" "Moderate" or "Low," I will not find any problems if I am unable to find, download and install them?
    Belarc Advisor report ->

These required security hotfixes (using the 08/14/2012 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) were not found installed. Note: CIS benchmarks require that Critical and Important severity security hotfixes must be installed.
