I would like to copy many of my desktop icons in IE8 to another computer but they frequently get converted to a generic IE "e" version.

Where can I find the actural graphic .ico stored so I can select it whenever I want?

This is my take on this .....

When you place a shortcut to a URL on your desktop a standard IE icon is assigned, but if the site in question uses Favicons that icon will be assigned to the shortcut the next time it is opened.

Whether or not you can assign a favicon.ico to a URL shortcut I do not know - my XP box is only used for BBS reference purposes and not for surfing, but use the Search facility for favicon and this should throw up a list of the favicons on the computer. It does on my W 7 box.

Its been a while since I have had XP but you can look under your user directory /appdata/local (if thats available in XP).

EDIT: Sorry Pete, I stepped on you

    For system icon files.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll

To locate other .ico files just do a search for *.ico.

I created an Icon folder in My Documents which contain the copy and pasted favicons from my favorite URLs and custom created icons. Usually you will have to rename them. Don't forget to leave the .ico after the name if you have show files extensions checked.

I searched for Favicon and got a lot of things like:

Favicon[4].ico and just a generic icon so know way to know what it is.

As far as a path name, it just shows for instance, in folder: PH58CKGJ ??

I also couldn't find anything useful in: (user directory)/appdata/local or related.

Still no luck to find where the custom icons are stored.

You will find many favicons at the following

    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Copy and paste it into Explorer to view the folders such as PH58CKGJ.

You need to enter *.ico into the Search box, not favicon.

    Whiskeyman,

ContentIE5 folders didn't seem to have anything in them that I recognized and most just had a 1kb desktop.ini.

Please clarify how to "paste into Explorer ".

Also, a search for *.ico brought up tons of Favicon[n].ico where n is various numbers and a folder name.

Isn't there some way where Search can show the entire path name?

    Robls99,

Have you tried to open these shortcuts with the generic Icon on the new computer?

I don't use IE but if memory serves once connected IE may pick up the favicon and change the shortcut icon to suit.

EDIT: Ignore the above, I'm thinking of favourites rather than shortcuts.

When you double click My Computer the window that opens is Explorer. You may need to right click on an empty space of the tool bar and check Address Bar so that you can paste C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and then click Go to view the folders. These folders hold many temporary files including favicons until cleared.

Search on my XP system shows the complete path under In Folder. You may need to drag the bar at the top to expand the view of the full path.
