Did this open the file in notepad?

Welcome to WindowsBBS doris2001. Fredb38 is trying to unblock sites, not block them as the koffix app does. ;)

    Doris(?)

Welcome to the boards, but right now we're trying to remove the restrictions in a hosts file not add to them ;)

Stick around though, I'm sure you can help others.

    Try this one from Run.

    notepad %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

See what's listed below the main body of text starting with 127.0.0.1
I did and it opened. The very first line was Fuc! You if you know what i mean.
    That didn't look good.

    Please download HostsXpert.
    1. Unzip HostsXpert.zip to it's own folder.
    2. Open the folder and right click on HostsXpert.exe then select Run as Administrator
    3. Then click on "Restore MS Hosts File" to restore your Hosts file to its default condition.
    4. Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
    5. Close program when complete.

I read on the internet on how to replace the host file. It said to downloaded a file called host.zip In this zip was a file called host. I changed my host file to host.old and pasted the new host file in its place. The two sites that were blocked are now available and working fine. Did I do the right thing and if so is their anything else I need to do?
I assume that the dirty words in my old host file is a sign that it has been hit. Is their anything to do so this doesn't happen again.

Provided the new hosts file contains the same information as shown here, you did fine and can delete the original hosts file.

Since your hosts file was infected, I would suspect there may be other infections presaent as well. I recommend you read this topic and post the suggested log in a new topic to that forum for analysis.

    Sigh...

Right-click the cmd.exe item that appears on the Start Menu after you type cmd in the Start Search box, and from the menu choose Run as administrator.

No, you have to specifically start an elevated command prompt.
