Hi folks I am hoping you can help me, I have been getting a virtual memory low message over the past 2 days when I switch on my laptop and as I am not a technically minded gal do not know what to do?!

I have McAfee security program, Processor type is 1.60GHz Intel(R)Celeron(R)M, amount of Ram 1.12GB My C Drive total size is 21.2GB free space 8.14GB My virtual memory has custom size selected and shows initial size 288MB maximum 576 - does this info help?

Would appreciate assistance with this as my laptop is now soooooo slowwwww!

Remove the custom settings and let windows manage virtual memory, does that help?

    Yep, that's the one...

Your system will probably still be slow but it should get rid of the memory low errors...

Post back to confirm and we'll take a look at why your systems crawling.

    With no errors?

If yes, can I advise you toward malware and virus removal.

    2 Reasons,

1 - Malware is a common reason for slow computers and startup.
2 - The logs you supply to Broni will help me see what is slowing your computer even if it is not malware.

I'll be looking in on that thread but please be patient, Broni is a busy fella right now, follow the instructions below to the letter for a speedier response.

Please read this and post requested logs in the Malware and virus removal board.

    NOTES:
When posting the logs ensure word wrap is switched off (in notepad Uncheck Format->Word Wrap) as this makes them difficult to read.

Be aware that only Malware analysts will advise and they are often busy. Your post will be taken on a first come first served basis but it may take a while before you receive a reply.

Include a link to this thread if you can.

Copy (ctrl-.C) and paste (ctrl-V) just post them as normal...

    1) Open DDS.LOG in notepad, ctrl-A (Select all), ctrl-c (copy), switch to your browser with new post, ctr-v (Paste).

Post that then repeat for attach.txt

I'll follow up your post with a link so don't worry about that.

Try another startup. Can also be a one time occurrence because a larger pagefile had to be created (on a slow hard drive).

Run chkdsk /f on your disk.

I would also recommend that you set a custom size for pagefile where minimum = maximum & equal to about twice the RAM in your system, in your case make it around 2.5 GB.

Pagefile can also suffer from fragmentation & the inbuilt defrag tool doesn't do anything about it. Download & install PageDefrag. It runs at boot & defragments paging files, event log files, and Registry hives (SAM, SYSTEM, SYSTEM.ALT, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, .DEFAULT), as well as shows how many fragments those files are in.

@rsinfo, customised pagefile settings is a partial cause of the original issue, we'll look at them later. For now XP's memory manager should be adequate ;)

@Arie, Good Idea, I never thought of that but I've a feeling it won't be that simple.

@Trisha, OK. Let's forget the logs for now. You're computer is getting on a bit, can you follow the instructions (using SIW) to complete your full system details specifically what OS (Home or Pro) and service pack you have.

Still looking for XP Home/pro and Service Pack level (you didn't use SIW did you ;))

Good to know your system is responding quicker though
