    Hello,
To the point: Three updates (two for WinXP and one for MSWord 2002) fail continuously, resulting in an error coded : 0x80246007.
As I consider myself a beginner in the computer game, I am not sure if the other update problem posts apply or not.
    Thank you in advance, Barry.

Try downloading and installing the updates manually through the Microsoft Website instead of using Microsoft Update. Do you know what the names of the updates are?

All I know are the three number groups : KB 2115168, KB 2229593 and KB 2251389.

Went to MS website and tried the scan and install method with same failed result. Also individual downloads and run, without the desired result.

Alright Arie I have my system details in. Thanks. I did have them in once, however, I must have managed to erase them some how(sheepish grin).

Pete, I had a two out of three success rate on the updates.
KB 2229593 = Error. "Set up cannot copy the file helpsvc.exe" was the report I recieved.

    Hello,
I went to Malware and Virus removal as requested and Broni was very helpful and thorough ...the machine is now clean.
The auto update is still sending me the same update.... KB2229593.
The update installed successfully, when ask if I wanted to continue the install without copying the helpsvc.exe file....

    New thread for this?

    Thank you, Barry.

I suggest you start a free Windows Update support incident email request:

    https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527&st=1&wfxredirect=1&sd=gn

or, as you are in Canada ....

See the "How to obtain help" section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2229593

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338; and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB2229593).

    Hi Pete,
the problem was resolved in the first step they asked. Great.

Pete, when I was asked to do this part of the step....

    3. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder and choose "Rename ", type SDOLD as the new name. ...

, does this render the file nonexistent and it can be deleted or....?

    Thanks, Barry.

Did the SoftwareDistribution folder get re-created? If so then you can remove the SDOLD folder.

Hold on,..... it appears the solution only lasted the night..... bugga (to harsh?:D).... Back to applying the next step. Sorry.

Yes Evan, I had a look and now there is a new SoftWare Distribution folder.

:) Pete, when this becomes a problem solved, I will mark the thread accordingly.:)

    Onto the second try.

    Thanks, Barry.
