    Unknown Device

I would just like to find out what the darn thing is. The program I ran from PC Pitstop says my drivers are up to date. I have run three other programs that claim other wise. But I don't even know if it is a driver or not. Very conflicting.
    Thanks.

No, that listing is under the heading Computer, correct? That is a general description of the computer. The ACPI controller should be listed under the heading System Devices.

Keep uninstalling the Unknown Device and rebooting several times, as I said, it may have been installed in the wrong order.

When you restart and Add New Hardware wizard runs, look at the options you can make. Choose "No, not now" to search on the internet. You can choose to search the drives and insert your Windows CD. No luck, go back again and choose to "Select the driver myself ". See what options are offered, if you can look at a list, check for a listing for SiS and see if there is ACPI.

I am going by your original information that included the term ACPI, if ACPI is mentioned when the Add New Hardware runs (read the information in the boxes), that is the driver you need. The SiS ACPI driver is not available from the SiS website, apparently it should be installed by Windows, if so, there has been a hiccup in the installation.

The ACPI's I have under system devices are ACPI Fixed Feature Button & Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. I just went into the unknown & chose reinstall, then advanced, choose location, system devices. sis, found pci to isa bridge location, which is where the unknown is & installed. The device has gone from the manager lists. Maybe that was it. I will reboot just to see what happens.

Well I have rebooted twice since my last post and it hasn't reappeared. I am a curious sort and would love to know the in's and out's of this venture but I guess I will never know. Thanks everyone for the inputs and advice.

I believe your problem device was a Winbond memory stick.

As an aside, one should take note and proceed with caution when mucking around with all things ACPI related. I haven't seen it for a couple of years but changing ACPI settings can actually affect IDE contollers and devices (as in hard disk drives). I can recall ACPI changes causing VIA chipset problems in particular and the fix wasn't pretty.

    ;)
