While looking in the device manager I came across an unknown device. The only thing I can find on it is "ACPI\WEC0515\4&398EACD8&0 ". I couldn't find anything on Google that tells me anything. Anyone have any input on this issue?

According to Driverguide.com this is associated with a soundmax digital audio. I tried to create a link the search on driverguide but is failed. So, here is the google search I did. It is the 5th item from the bottom of the search page. Hope it helps.

Thanks for your time. Maybe it is for my memory stick slot. I have e-mailed Sony to see what they say about it.

This is the reply I got from Sony. Apparently my first e-mail didn't go this reply came within 4 hours. I don't really know what it means because it isn't on a laptop. If you have any input on the subject.

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry that an unknown device is found in the Device Manager in your VAIO Notebook computer. This is the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), a power management specification developed by Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba. ACPI, which will be part of the next version of Windows, enables the operating system to control the amount of power given to each device attached to the computer. With ACPI, the operating system can turn off peripheral devices, such as a CD-ROM players, when they're not in use. As another example, ACPI will enable manufacturers to produce computers that automatically power up as soon as you touch the keyboard.

    Thank you for choosing Sony.

What are the system specs for your computer? Maybe I can look around and see if I can find something else?

Get the chipset driver updates (probably an Intel chipset), from the Sony website for your model.

They can get "jammed" sometimes. I usually find that uninstalling the driver in Device Manager and restarting will often let it install correctly.

If you are stuck, boot into Safe Mode and do any uninstalling there. Look in Add or Remove programs if there is a listing for the SIS chipset drivers, uninstall those, reboot and run the installer for updated version again. The uninstaller could be bundled with the installer package.

You have SP3 installed, if the version of the SIS chipset drivers from the Sony website pre-dates SP3, you may want see if there are newer versions at the SIS website.

Kiaville, I would stick with Matt's advice. I was googling your problem yesterday and came across this page where a user had nearly the same problem and he re-installed his drivers and "fixed" the problem.

    Unknown Device

The only SiS I have in add & remove is SiS VGA Utilities, SiS AGP Driver, SiS Compatible VGA V2.09a. I ran driver update programs again and everything is still up to date. The updates I have came from the SiS website.

I googled the mobo model number and found it is installed in the Sony VAIO PCV-RXG408 PC. Is that your model number?

The only references to this PC I could find were at Sony UK

At the SIS website, all I could find were pre-SP3 drivers.

You may want to check the Sony UK web site for possible drivers for your memory stick (if that is what is failing).

One thing I don't see in this thread is this: (if you have already done this just tell me)

Go to the device manager, right click on the device and uninstall. OK you way out. Reboot and see if XP finds a suitable driver for it.

    Post back when you can

ACPI is the "interface" with the BIOS to control low power settings. It will rely on the chipset drivers. I have just been looking at SiS website in another thread and I expect the main chipset drivers are installed by Windows.

You don't say that you uninstalled the ACPI driver in Device Manager. You should see it listed with a yellow exclamation mark. The exclamation mark means that the driver is not working, I just highlight/select those and uninstall them. They may be reinstalled correctly on reboot. If the Add New Hardware wizard runs when you reboot, try directing it to the Windows installation CD.

My interpretation of the problem is that the drivers for the ACPI were installed in the wrong order with other chipset drivers.

Don't be afraid to uninstall the problem driver and reboot (it may take several goes). Also look at what selections you make if the Add New Hardware wizard runs at startup.

You can try right-clicking on the problem driver in Device Manager and selecting "Update driver ". You may be lucky :D

    Unknown Device

Hi! My model is PCV-RX850. Nothing is failing. I was just trying to find out what this unknown device is. I also have a camera driver installed. Maybe it's that. According to the manager it does not have a driver installed for it. I did the uninstall driver and it disappeared but came back after a reboot. Its location is "on PCI standard ISA bridge ". Means nothing to me. Thanks.

Have you tried uninstalling the device in device manager then rebooting and letting the hardware wizard find the driver?

Are you refering to the ACPI Uniprocessor PC? That is the only one listed and there is no yellow exclamation mark. There is one on the unknown device and that is all. I did update on this but nothing new came up. Thanks.
