Ok so I know most of you will probably say there are a million other discussions and fixes out there for this issue, but none have worked for me this far. When I try to run windows network diagnostics I get a "local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration" I've tried resetting the network card flushing the DNS, ect and I always end up with the same thing. I've stopped the bonjour service from starting up. This is occurring on a laptop that before about 2 weeks ago the wired connection worked fine (no wifi) and this happened suddenly over night. Some things to note, I can ping my computers IP address just fine. When I look at the IPconfig page some things I noticed that are weird to me: my network adapter that is listed has the IPv4 autoconfigure address as: 169.254.71.252. My provider says this tells them that something is blocking the connection. Also for default gateway, it's blank, nothing listed at all. Also listed are two "tunnel adapters" that I'm clueless about. One is "teredo tunneling pseudo-interface" under it it says media is disconnected, physical address is all zeros says DHCP is not enabled but autoconfigure is enabled. That's all the data for that one. The other is "tunnel adapter isatap.{bunch of numbers here} it's median state is also disabled along with DHCP. Auto confignis is also enabled. All other devices on my network work both wired and wireless. I tried unplugging the network cable from my laptop into my PS3 and it works just fine so I know the problem isn't there. I believe I have disabled all anti virus and firewalls as well. I'm really not sure where else to go from here and this is really frustrating me. If anyone can give me some kind of guidance that would be great! Sorry for typing errors... Typing this all on my iPad because it still gets an Internet connection. Thanks in advance for all your help!

PS: I tried a power down and rebooting of the router with no effect and I've also tried the MAC address trick but to no avail.

169.x.x.x is the address range assigned by Windows when an address is unavailable from a router or not manually assigned.

Teredo and isatap tunneling are virtual adapters (entirely software) that are used for IP6 connections.

    Properly configure the network adapter:
Open Network & Sharing Center >
On left click Change adapter settings >
Right click the Ethernet adapter > select Properties >
    Uninstall QoS >
    Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IP) >
Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) > Advanced button > WINS tab > uncheck Enable LMHosts > select Enable Netbios over TCP/IP > OK > OK >OK.

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services:
    Set Windows Firewall to Disabled.

Verify these services are set to:
    DHCP Client Automatic
    DNS Client Automatic (Trigger Start)
    IP Helper Manual
    Network Location Awareness Automatic
    Network Store Interface Automatic
TCP/IP Netbios Helper Automatic (Trigger start)
    Wired AutoConfig Manual
    WLAN AutoConfig Manual
    WWAN AutoConfig Manual

If have an Internet Security program such as McAfee or Norton or other, open its interface and shut OFF its firewall completely.

Reboot computer. If it fails to connect to the router then (1) ethernet cable is bad or (2) ethernet port on router or computer is bad or (3) ethernet adapter inside computer is bad or (4) some other thing wrong best known to God & Gates.

Hi guys, sorry for taking so long to post. I had to borrow a laptop to connect to my network in order to get the ipconfig /all listing from a computer that would connect. I want to thank you guys first for the warm welcome and for being willing to help. To answer some questions: The problem computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1. The modem/router is the Arris Whole Home Media Gateway model - MG5225G/NA All my settings on my problem computer are set to configure automatically including IP. I also have DHCP enabled as well. I tried all 4 ethernet ports on my router and 4 different cables. All the cables work and connect to the internet using any of the 4 ports or any of the 4 cables on all other devices including this laptop I'm borrowing so I know the cables and ports are not the issue.

TonyT - I will try your suggestions you mentioned above as soon as I'm done posting this but I wanted to get my details up first.. Something you said DID ring a bell and that was disabling LMHOSTS. I do know it IS indeed enabled on the problem machine so I'm hopefull going through your steps will help so thanks a bunch!

Thanks again everyone for your help!

Here are my ipconfig details from a computer that IS working and connected just fine:

TonyT - I went through your list and it did not change anything. Still cannot connect. Should I change the IPv6 settings back? I've heard that disabling them could sometimes cause issues.

Disabling IP6 will have not cause any problems.
The ethernet adapter or its port on the laptop may be bad.
Doe it have a wifi adapter?

No wifi. I can confirm port on the router is fine as I have changed it and the cables both to test it with my PS3 that port and cable works just fine on it. Also the ports on both the router and the computer both glow orange when I have the cable plugged in.

Try setting up a static IP address using these settings:
    IP Address . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.99
    Subnet . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

If cannot get connected then one of the following MUST be true:
    1. adapter in computer is bad; try a different one.
    2. ethernet port on computer is bad; try a different adapter.
    3. router is set to only allow x number of dhcp client connections; access router via a browser and change number to x + 10.
    4. some firewall or software is preventing net connections; disable software and/or remove malware/viruses by doing this:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.
