firewall and antivirus are completely unrelated, to be honest you don't need to turn off anything the isntaller will automatically disable and enable whatever needs to be done.

Its just good practise to close open programs when you install something.

Go for it and reinstall windows firewall. There is no harm in dial a fix and its perfectly safe to use.

    Hi Elanor,

In regards to Norton, as long as your subscription is still active, you are entitled to a free update to Norton AntiVirus 2009, which is highly recommended and may help resolve the other issues you are having. To update to Norton AntiVirus 2009 please carefully follow the instructions below.

First, make note of your current Norton Activation Key.

    1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool:

    Norton Removal Tool and instructions

    3. After you run the tool, restart your computer .Log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.

    4. Follow the instructions on the following page (Norton Update Center) to download and installer the Norton AntiVirus 2009 installer.

    Norton Update Center

    5. When the installation is complete, launch Norton AntiVirus 2009 and select "Run LiveUpdate" to check for any available updates. This will enable the new "Pulse" updates feature to work automatically

    6. When the updates are complete, click on the "Scan Now" button and perform a "Full System Scan" to check for infections.

Please try this process and let me know the outcome.

    Thank you,
    Mike

Evan Omo and Lipe123 - Unfortunately, Dial-A-Fix did not work to reinstall Security Center.

Thanks to all who have tried to help me solve the problem with Security Center not starting. None of the proposed fixes have solved the problem.

I have already invested too much time in this so I have decided to start Security Center manually each time I boot up the pc.

This forum has a lot of generous, unselfish people and I know I will come here for solutions in the future.

    Eleanor,

I read your thread earlier and was going to post but bit my tongue. I share your frustration because a lot of stuff has been thrown against the wall with the hope that something might stick. Not that these were bad suggestions, quite to the contrary; however, I think you would be better advised to consider a different approach.

The fact that something is shutting down your firewall has sounded alarm bells and you shouldn't ignore it or try to work around it. You very well could have been "bitten" by some form of malware that Norton or your other defenses didn't "intercept ". It can be a nasty world out there no matter how careful one is. If I were in your shoes, I'd first want to be able to rule out any and all possible threats that might have crawled into my system. Secondly, I'd be looking for a firewall that wasn't shutting down for some mysterious reason.

My recommendation is that you read this thread and follow the instructions to begin a thread in the malware forum. Mr noahdfear & company will see to it that you leave the forum with a healthy machine, a wealth of new knowledge and a solution to your current problem.

    ;)

Rockster2U: Thanks for your reply. I have spent hours on another forum trying to resolve this problem and downloaded and run multiple free software programs and none of the solutions offered have worked.

In looking at the malware forum referred by you I see that RSIT is recommended. That is one of those I tried. Also tried Anti-Malware, ATF Cleaner, Hijack this, Dial-a-fix, OTMove It3, OTViewI and others I can't even remember. I updated Windows and Norton AV with no positive results.

I consider myself an experienced pc user. In the past I have been able to solve my own problems through use of online sites such as forums and have learned a great deal, but this seems unresolvable. I have no time to pursue this further on a forum, but thanks for trying to help.

I have installed Zone Alarm (free version) for the fire wall. I used it in the past and had no problems with it.

I will do one more thing and that is scan with TrendMicro or some such online scan, but otherwise I'm just going to rely on ZoneAlarm in the future.

Ok Eleanor. I hope you will enjoy the zonealarm firewall. I am sorry I couldn't be of further asisstance. I know that having a problem thats so called unresolvable can be frustrating. I have had problems like yours that whatever solution I tried I couldn't resolve it. Don't give up hope. There has to be a solution out there. :)
