    In response to mattman's post.

A far as the PSU is concerned, it didn't make a difference. The multiple start up attempts still happens, (even after trying a 450W PSU). If you meant that the noises have subsided, and went away, they went away on their own. I don't know what did it, but the sounds that had me concerned seemed like a "faze ". And the thing is, that all types of PSU that i've tried had the same results. The original one from the pc (100W), the 250W, the 300W, and the 450W that I tested, all had the same results.

A far as parts are concerned, I've been doing that, with the guidence I've had from this site.

I've tried the putting a fan directed into my pc, as well as removing the graphics card, in order to test those parts. BSOD still occured.

I've made sure recently that there is sufficient space on my pc's drives. I've also ran a disk defragmentation on all drives installed. After which, I checked my e-mail, logged out, left my internet explorer web page open, and hours later, I came back to my pc to find a BSOD happened. I've ran that run error check (chkdsk) on all drives of my pc, but what did you mean by running a scan to checking the disk surface? Could you go more into detail about that? Or perhaps, you meant for me to physically check the drives. In that case, I have a small dilemma with that, I've had a problem last time that I cleaned out all the dust out of my pc. The drives and CD drives proved to be difficult to get out. I couldn't get them out. So, I couldn't check them on the physical level. In addition, what are the "drive manufacturer's utilities ", and how do I run this scan? Just like you stated, I also think that the trouble may lie as a drive problem, or a system file problem, (or worse, both). I should also meantion that I am having difficulty with the CD rom and dvd drives for my pc too. This specific area has been a problem before the BSOD problem started.

I apoligize for not looking up the chipset drivers I've must have overlooked that. By any chance, would you happen to know where I should go to check/download such an update? Would I be able to find updates for drivers, for both, the drivers that hold the memory for my pc, and the cd and dvd drives from the hp web site?

As far as identifing the problem, whether its hardware or software related, thats why I have been doing as I've been instructed here. I do think that the problem lies with software, but that doesn't mean I am not going to rule out a hardware possibility. That is why I have been doing as those whom have responded here, have said.

I hope someone can "see" or for lack of a better word, "know ", where the problem for my pc specifically lies in.

I should also meantion a few things. One thing is, that I sent hp support a response, and provided links to my pc problem, I'll post what they have responded to me with momentarilly. Another is, that when I was like 85% done with running all the deframentation scans on the drives on my pc, a windows file protection message came up. It stated that system files have been replaced by modified or unreconized files, and that I needed to put in the windows cd in order to replace those files with the default ones. This is why I left my pc alone and I then went looking for the cd, when I finally found it, I came back to my pc, and a BSOD had happen, even though the pc was idle and no scans where being ran.

Well, other than that, all I can say is, what are any of you who reads this, thoughts are on this?

You can get information about the hardware in your computer by going to Start -> Run and enter msinfo32.

You should use Help and Support searches, for example, the above information can be found in Help and Support by entering "system information ". Looking up information in Help and Support will give you some guidelines and help you to understand the computer better.

Since it is a Hewlett Packard computer you should become very familiar with the HP website. The model of the computer should be on a sticker on the back of the tower.
    http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/support/prod_info.html
You will find lots of information about it.
www.hp.com/support and enter the model number.
You will find a link for driver downloads that should include updates for the chipset (look for the term "INF Updates" if it is an Intel based system). [Also updates for the graphics and audio drivers, etc.]

Get to know your computer and where you can find updates and help with problems, which may be HP in your case, because all the parts and operating system are manufactured and supplied by them.

If you have installed "dodgy" software or "gotten a virus ", etc, HP will just advise you to use the recovery disks (loss of all data on the drive). You should have your system backed up. I have my system backed up so that in the event of a "catastrophic" failure I can be back up and running within a few hours. ACTUALLY, if I find my system (or those that I work on) is having problems and I cannot find a solution in a reasonable amount of time, I don't mind reinstalling Windows, the system is "new" again and any cobwebs are gone.
What will you do if your HDD fails tomorrow?

If you open My Computer, right-click on the drive and select Properties, then go to the Tools tab -> Error Checking, you will see checkboxes for "Automatically fix..." and "Scan for and attempt... ". Put a check in both of those boxes.

The Hewlett-Packard website should have "disk utilities" or diagnostics (see above). Otherwise, you may want use Device Manager -> (open the branch for) Disk Drives, there will be a model number for the HDD. Put the model number into a websearch along with the term "download ". Look at the results for downloads at the major hard disk drive manufacturer's websites (there should only be one HDD manufacturer).

I am trying to give you some tips and tricks to save you going the long way like I did 12+ years ago. Teach yourself about your computer. Because it is a HP computer, use the information at the HP website (they are not "everyday" computers). Those questions you have included are GOOD. Let us know if you are unsure about what we are telling you ;). We don't know if you are able to understand what our suggestions mean. Just say "What does ........ mean "

Don't be surprised if the only support you can get is at HP.

    Matt

O.k. I've been doing what you said, (except the recovery thing). I've gone to that link you posted, and looked around for stuff to update on my pc. BSOD still happen. So, any other suggestions?

P.S.: Is there are scan out there that fixes registry problems? I've been thinking, a lot of the BSOD have the message, "IRQL not found ... ". In addition, when I tried to compress the files on my C: drive (main), there were quite a few files that were not present, and others that access was denied. I have administrative privaleges on this pc, so I don't know why it would say that, but I think it may be related to the problem as a whole. What do any of you people think I should do?

Exactly what did you do and what versions are now installed? (I hope you are keeping detailed track of the actions you perform.)

I tend to trust Macecraft's jv16 PowerTools (jv16PT) which has a Registry Cleaner. You can download jv16PT and I think it is fully functional for 30 days before you need to decide whether to purchase or not.

However, I would hesitate to try "fixing" your registry primarily for three reasons.
    1. You probably still have malware in your computer (which may interfere with proper registry scanning/cleaning/fixing).
    2. You might get a BSOD while jv16PT is cleaning/fixing which I suspect may create even bigger problems for you.
    3. Fixing/cleaning/editing your registry might seriously muck up your computer. Read my disclaimer/caution below. (***)

How did you go about trying to "compress" files on your C: drive? What utility did you use? Exactly what files did you compress (or try to compress). Exactly what files were not present? Exactly which files were you denied access to (and when)? Exactly what did the error messages state?

Have you performed the steps I linked in your Hardware forum thread? If so, then you did not post a follow-up in your hardware forum thread indicating exactly what you did (as requested).

DISCLAIMER/CAUTION: Editing/cleaning/repairing your computer's registry is potentially dangerous. You might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Before you edit/clean/repair your registry with any method, be sure you make a backup of your registry and you know how to access and use that backup in case you muck up your computer.

If you decide to manually edit your registry, then be sure you are comfortable with editing the registry and I suggest you save a backup of at least the section you edit ahead of time in case you need/want to reverse your changes. Editing the registry can produce serious undesirable consequences if done incorrectly.

In any case, you should know ahead of time how to restore your original registry settings and prepare to do so in case the need arises.

I also suggest you create a System Restore point before making any changes (regardless of what method you use). System Restore may be accessed as follows.
    • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Microsoft KB306084: How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP

    Response to the previous post.

I clicked on the link for the support from hp, this brought me to the support and drivers section of the web site. I then clicked on the "start detection" button, inorder to remove any error from my part when providing infromation. I installed the active X file that is required, and continued.

The software detected the "compaq presario 6000z desktop pc" and the "hp psc 2200 all in one series printer ". I then clicked on the link for the "Software & Driver downloads ".

The next thing that the screen lead me to is the software & Driver downloads screen. Here, I clicked on the link for the microsoft windows xp.

In the screen that followed, I looked through all of the list. I've decided to download to following from top to bottom. For the audio section, I chose " Soundblaster Live 5.1 driver update ", during the installation, a message appeared stating that a particular program needed to be unistalled. I thought it over, and went with it. After which, the installation processes continued. When that was done, I restarted my pc. I'm sorry, I don't remember what was the name of the program that was replaced/uninstalled.

Now for the driver - graphics section. I chose the " Intel Extreme Graphics Driver Update ". I went through the process of installing it. Nothing particular seemed bizzare. After which, I restarted as well.

The next thing I downloaded was the " BIOS update for AM37 and MS-6390 motherboards ". The installation went well, but after which, when I gave the command to restart, a BSOD happened during the initial restart process. I didn't want to mess with my pc after that, and it was late, so I turned it off for the night.

The next time that I turned on my pc, the multiple start up problem was present. When I was finally able to log in normally, I went back to the web page that had the downloads. I looked in the category below BIOS, and desided that I would move the files I want to keep from my pc, off to an external hard drive at a later date. I have not done this yet.

I then looked down the list, and then decided to download the " Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-039 Buffer Overrun In RPCSS Service Could Allow Code Execution (824146) " from the operating system - enhancements section. The download went well.

The next thing and final thing I downloaded, was the " HP Update Security Vulnerability Update " under the sofware section. The installation went well.

BSOD still occure after updating all of these things, and even an incident that was particularly bizzare. One day, after installing all of the above updates, the mouse cursor went up and down all on its own on the screen. Nothing was opened, and I didn't move the mouse prior to this strange event. The cursor only stopped when I touched the mouse.

Also, norton virus updates are quite frequent. So much, that I decided to look around inside my pc (software-wise), in order to find something that could support my suspisions, (or at least prove me wrong). There have also been alerts, (other than my antivirus definitions) being out of date, that my symantec, trusted application list, shared components, and security software were out of date. when I tried to use live up date to fix this, a BSOD happened. After a second attempt, I decided that the next time that I would attempt to update these norton components, that I would do one at a time. Well, the next time I was able to log in, I did just that, starting with the smallest. After two of the four components stated that were out of date, I restarted my pc. I logged back in, and a BSOD happened. I then continued to get my pc up to where I can log in normally, and so I did. After logging in, I then continued the update to norton, continuing with one at a time. After each one, I would restart, log in, and continue. after the final one, which was the antivirus definitions, (which was a little over 2000 kilo-bytes of data). a minute or two past, and of course, a BSOD happened. After checking that the download went through completely, by logging back in and checking the status of my pc, I left it alone.

Now, onto my look into proof of something wrong with norton. I remember just browsing my pc's programs, and recalled the system information. I then clicked start, then all programs, then accessories, then system tools, and finally, system information. Which now that I take a second look at it, has an lower case "I" sign on its icon. I then look under the "internet settings" branch, then, I click on the plus sign for "Cache ", and clicked on "list of objects" sub topic that appear. This is the list that appears.

Note: there are two damaged components, one of them is the antivirus scanner.

    Response to mailman's post.

I'll do that if after all other possibilities have been at least attempted, and I am advised by a skilled pc tech, (like you), or another, to attempt such a feet for fixing my pc.

I compressed the files on my drives, after defragmenting the drives. I opened the my computer window, right clicked on the c: drive and chose properties; then, checked the box for compressing the files on the drive in the window that followed. Since it was already checked, I unchecked it, and rechecked it, in order to make the "apply" button become active. I wanted to do this in order to see if any new files that I put on my pc (purposely), were effecting performance by there size. As in my previous post, I've stated that I downloaded particular updates for my pc, well, I wasn't sure if those things took up more space than they should have, (either way, it couldn't hurt, could it?) So, I went with the LONG!!! process of compression. I did it to the three drives on my pc, C:, D:, and G:. C: was the only one to take the longest, by far. I wanted to also see, if any, suspicious things would happen, and if a BSOD would happen during such a normal activity. Drive D: and G:, went smoothly. As far as the files that were not found/or able to be accessed, I don't remember them, or have them written down. There were quite a few. If you would like, I could attempt it again, and "jot" them down on a piece of paper, (or wordpad)? I don't mind repeating that task, (even if it is long).

I've just printed it, and I've done some of it. I'll post a response when I've done the other half, which should be later on tonight.

    Weird event.

O.k., after I posted that last post of mine, I left my pc alone for a few minutes. When I came back, big surprise, (sarcasim) BSOD. I kept trying over and over. This is the attempt that didn't cunk out on me. when all initial start ups were done. I checked norton's status. It displayed a red "X ", indicating a major problem. I clicked on the "fix it now" hyperlink, and in a few seconds, it was normal again.

Oh, and just in case I haven't pointed it out thus far, I think that any hardware issues I'm facing is solely delt because of a software issue. Whether its a virus, worm, damaged program, or other. At this point, its just stressful just to deal with this pc of headaches. Sorry, I just had to put that out there.

    ...overview.

I see that there are no thoughts posted about what I've recently stated. Either that, or all personal whom are capable of providing assistance are preocupied with matters else-where.

How come this doesn't surprise anyone?

    Forsaken Knight:
You have had several threads going for 2-3 months and despite numerous attempts from several very qualified members of this community to provide assistance, your situation has only gone from bad to worse. Why is this?

You have jumped from one thing to another looking for a quick fix and have failed to adequately respond to most questions that were asked of you. Similarly, you have jumped from one thread to another when you either couldn't or wouldn't respond. Now, here we go again.

Most readers are aware that you have numerous unresolved hardware and software issues. Although you have been instructed to resolve your hardware issues first, you continue bumping threads that relate to software issues while failing to address your hardware situation. One of your threads has already been locked and I suspect that most who have tried to provide assistance have given up on you because your follow-up is seriously lacking. You can count me among those.

Having said that and making this my last contribution to your dilemma, let me thrown in my thoughts.

First off, you are under-powered with a 300W power supply. You have either two or three physical hard drives, two opticals and an external drive and you have gone from an on-board video GPU to an ATI 9660. These additional components were inadequetely powered with the 250W Bestech PSU and they remain that way with the 300W PSU you purchased.

Secondly, you have a problem with your video drivers and until you remove both the Intel drivers and the ATI drivers and re-install whatever you plan on using, you will continue to experience problems. You can not keep switching back and forth between GPU's without proper driver removal and replacement.

Third, I suspect a memory problem as you have added to the memory that originally shipped with the machine. I also suspect that this is contributing to your Blue Screening.

Fourth, you may have a capacitor issue and I can guarantee that neither you or your "buddy at school" are qualified to make this repair. If he has cold soldering equipment, you might get lucky but for you to tell anyone you have previously replaced any board mounted (soldered) components is a real stretch.

Lastly, on the hardware side of the fence, you have mentioned that you are tight on money (thus the 300W PSU when 400-450W was a recommended minimum). If you don't want to send your board out for capacitor repair, I would expect that you could buy a similar computer for $100 on ebay and swap out the motherboard and get some decent memory compared to whatever you added on your own. You will find a replacement board from HP will cost you $250+ and require the return of your existing board.

In response to your software question, it appears that Norton has either been disabled or is corrupted. This could be viral or it could relate to bad memory read/write issues. You may also have some OS problems that quite possibly could be addressed with SFC or a repair installation, but if you can't keep the machine running, this too becomes problematic. Couple this with the probability of resident malware which will also require scanning tools and you may understand why you must first address your hardware issues.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
