Ramona: Ow. I wish I'd been here when your post first appeared. (I just got home from dropping our dog off with friends. I'm leaving tomorrow morning, flying to Chicago, returning next Monday.) I'd have a clearer recollection of the answer.

    I think the path was: C:\Documents and Settings\myfullname\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User.

Ramona: I must have. I've found this path:

    E:\SeaMonkey\Default User\*.slt

That *.slt folder is quite small, though, only 434 KB. So I assume the contents of the Backup Profile folder I created from Netscape haven't yet been copied into it.

    Does that answer your question?

    BOBBO,

It should be a subfolder of the Mozilla folder:

    E:\Mozilla\Profiles\SeaMonkey\default\*.slt

First, open SM, and click on Tools | Switch Profiles

What Profiles are listed in the Profile Manager?

Ramona: There are 2 of them. One is my original Netscape profile. The other is "Default User," which if I remember correctly is the wordage that appears in the box when someone first opens the Create Profile window, and I didn't change it to anything else.

Delete the Netscape Profile, and when prompted, select "Delete Files ". I'm assuming that you still have the Netscape Profile backup on E:\ correct?

Delete the "default" profile, and when prompted select DON'T Delete Files.

Now click on the Create Profile tab, and this time click on the Browse Tab, and point to: E:\Mozilla\Profiles\SeaMonkey and leave the "default user" in the "Enter New Profile Name" field.

Look at the path where it says: "Your user settings, preferences, bookmarks, and mail will be stored in: "
and it should point to: E:\Mozilla\Profiles\SeaMonkey\default

Be sure you have moved the "default" profile folder on C: to the above SeaMonkey folder.

    Ramona: When you say,
do you mean delete Default User (the current SM profile) from the Manage Profiles window in Tools, or do you mean to drill down into the Windows Explorer tree and delete a file or folder named "default "? And if the latter, which one, there are probably several of that name?

Now that I've deleted the Netscape profile from it, when I open the Tool | Profile Manager window, the only profile remaining is "Default User," and the "Delete Profile" button is grayed out. And I don't see any "Save Files" option, and I never did see any "Don't Delete Files. "

    Last Step:

Since you have a "good" backup of your Netscape 7.1 Profiles folder, you can now uninstall Netscape. Use the Add/Remove programs option to uninstall.

After uninstalling Netscape, delete the Netscape Program folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape
(Save your plugins folder first, so you can copy that folder to the E:\ drive.)

Now browse to the Mozilla folder located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla
    Delete the registry.dat file
    Delete the Profiles folder

Leave the Mozilla folder and the pluginreg.dat file - nothing else.

Ramona: Before I delete NS 7.1 from Add/Remove, can I (should I) save the Mail folders? They're in the C:\Documents and Settings\...\*.slt path. I'd like to, if it's possible and won't corrupt anything.

    BOBBO,

You have already saved the Mail folder in your E:\Backup folder. You saved the Netscape 7.1 Profiles folder didn't you? The Profiles folder contains the Mail:

    Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\

It won't corrupt anything if you want to save them again... Just save them to the E: drive.

It's very, very late here, so must close and get some zzzzzz! I'm two hours ahead of you.

Have a nice trip to Chicago! :)

Ramona: Between those last 2 posts I discovered the copy of the Mail folder in the Backup folder, so now that you've assured me it's safe to use it again I'll copy that folder to partition E:\ next week when I return.

The new SM profile for some reason didn't wind up in quite the right place, so the *.slt file isn't in the right folder. I'll work on that next week, too. And then merge all the preferences, etc., into the right place.

    Thanks for all the help.

(It's been raining a lot in Chicago and elsewhere in the Midwest. Stay dry.)

    BOBBO,

Your xxxxxxxx.slt folder should be located here:

    E:\Mozilla\Profiles\SeaMonkey\default\xxxxxxxx.slt

Don't copy anything other than the Mail folder from the Netscape Profile on C:. Your backup of the Netscape Profiles folder on E:\ was made before the profile was corrupted. Removing Netscape and all its files/folder is now a priority in order not to corrupt your new Profile.

Ramona: I'm back! (Believe me, August 23 was no day to be flying to Chicago. Weather problems galore.) I returned a week ago, but I've been away from home much of the time, so this is the first opportunity I've had to resume setting up SeaMonkey in Partition E:\.

OK, here's how things stand now. I got SeaMonkey installed and the new e-mail account set up and working. Pretty much everything appears to be the way it should -- Address Book and Bookmarks are OK. The only snag I'm aware of now is the custom dictionary. The backed up custom.dic file is in the new profile with everything else that belongs there, but it doesn't seem to be connected. Any ideas?

    BOBBO,

Make a backup copy of the custom.dic file, then rename the file to:
persdict.dat. This is the name of the personal dictionary in SeaMonkey.

    See if that will works.

Ramona: I saved the old custom.dic file, then tried to create a persdict.dat file. Wouldn't work. There already was one. So I deleted that existing one and changed the name of the original custom.dic file to persdict.dat. It appears to be the right size, 29K, the same as the custom.dic file, but it doesn't seem functional. It also won't let me open it. I get a Windows Picture and Fax Viewer screen saying "No preview available." I'd like to be able to open and edit that file at times. Has something gone wrong?

Ramona: I'm reluctant to mess around with the new installation, not wanting to louse it up. Is there a way I can get inside that SeaMonkey persdict.dat file? I thought of clicking on Add to Dictionary a few times to get the new file going and then maybe that would let me add all the other entries from my old Netscape custom.dic file. Is that a solution? The old file has hundreds of items listed in it, and I'd sure rather not have to rebuild the new one from scratch. (See preceding post.) Any ideas?

    BOBBO,

I tried copying data from the custom.dic file, and also renaming the file to persdict.dat, and neither worked. Hang in, and don't do anything yet, because I'm trying to find out if there is a way to use that Netscape file in SeaMonkey.

    Thanks!

Ramona: OK, I'll wait for further word from you.

LATER: I think I figured it out. Instead of double-clicking on the persdict.dat file to open it, which always brought up the error message, I right-clicked on it and selected Open with Notepad. There were only 3 or 4 items in it that were the results of recent Add to Dictionary clicks. Then I copied the contents of the old NS custom.dic file into Notepad and clicked on Save as. That expanded the persdict.dat file from 1K to 29K, the same size as the custom.dic file, and now the persdict.dat file contains the same contents as the old custom.dic file and I think it works. Further testing will tell for sure. Has your research come up with anything similar?
