Well, after lots of testing and troubleshooting I think I resolved it. I had blocked access to the Net to Ntoskernal and generic host processes. when I allowed access, the problem stopped. haven't had a problem since.

    Mitch ,
    I do not understand.
Are you connected to the net and lose your connection or are you never connected at all.
Somewhere along the line you do not have a working internet connection to make it all simple.
I will assume that you are connecting at some point. Two possibilities . Channel interference from a neighbour . Change the channel - 1 and 11 are the two next choices although it may be trial and error. It may that stupid zone alarm. Disable it our better take it out.
If you are not connected at any point. Try connecting directly from your modem. Next check out your router. Is it set up properly. Is the encryption turned on and if so what is it. Change the chanel. Check you wireless card is installed properly. Disable zonealarm. There is a good program called network magic which you may find usefull.
It never ceases to amaze me the phone calls i get from people muttering something about "you have lost the connection to your server ". As if it is the most major event in the world. The world must stop. Tradgedy.
IE 7 is even more interesting. With no connection it gives a very nice web page not the blank screen. You would think the user is online by its description over the phone.
One day soon i am going to have enough of this stupidity.

Ok, here is what I have:

Pentium 2 400mhz system with 128MB Ram running Windows 2000 SP4. I have a network card connected to a wireless modem (no router). My service provider is Xanadoo (xanadoo.com). I am running Sygate Personal Firewall. I had originally set it to not allow NTOS Kernal & System, and Generic Host Process for Win32 access to the internet. because I did not understand why they need access (still don't). since I set it to allow them access, I have not had the subject error. I have still set the firewall to block access to Task Scheduler Engine because something is always trying to "run" it.

Like I said, since I made those changes to my Sygate firewall I have not had the error (don't understand why).

Wish I knew more about which applications, processes, etc needed access to the internet so I could make things smoother without putting my system at risk. If you know of a site which might explain those things I would be most grateful.

Thanks for responding to my post.

    Mitch

Windows 2000 networking connection confusion lol

Windows 2000 seems to have a problem with adding network connections ins sequence and then being confused . ( cannot understand why  )

delete the other connections and rename the one marked second ( there is no first i understand) to be the network connection.
Or uninstall the tcp/ip in the networking. Reboot and it should reinstall as # 1 connection.
