guard32.dll is part of Comodo Firewall. I would make sure you update it to make sure you have the latest version.

I check frequently, I just checked again now and ran the update operation, apparently successfully. Is COMODO interfering with IE starting? Is the updating of it going to help fixing IE?

EDIT: COMODO version 10.0 is loaded on my wife's laptop. Some on-line searching leads me to wonder if version 10 may not be compatible with Windows 7. Is that the problem?

I still get the "Failed to connect to a windows service" warning each time I boot up.

COMODO ver.10 is compatible with Win7. No problem over there.

Why don't you just uninstall it & check if your problem disappears.

I uninstalled COMODO, rebooted, and IE still "has stopped working." OK for me to download and install COMODO now?

I'd estimate it's 4 years old. This problem with IE not working is very recent, and my default browser (SeaMonkey) and other programs work OK.

Interesting new development: Last night I discovered that the COMODO free firewall version installed in my desktop computer (details are in my signature below, same as the laptop this thread is concerned with) was version 8.2.0.4978, way out of date. For months, every time I'd update it the process would indicate updates are available, I'd click on Update, the process would proceed and end with a notice that the last update had been 14 months ago. Never any change in version. So last night I downloaded and installed the current version, 10.0.1.6223. Everything worked fine until a few minutes ago when I tried to run IE and it wouldn't open! Same problem as on the laptop, but no warning or error message like what appears on the laptop.

There more and more appears to be a connection between COMODO's free firewall version 10 and Internet Explorer not running. What is it and what's the fix?

Why not disable Comodo and start Defender in W7 and see what happens? There may be a conflict in Comodo AV.

Disabled COMODO in both my desktop and my wife's laptop. IE still doesn't start in either one, although in the laptop an "IE has stopped working" error message opens, but not in the desktop.

By the way, my COMODO is the free firewall, not the AV. Both are the very latest version and updated today.

I would uninstall Comodo and just use Windows native firewall....

It worked!! COMODO 10 has a nice uninstall utility and it cleaned out the Firewall easily. It also told me I had to uninstall Internet Security Essentials to complete the entire project, and after a restart I did that, too. When I clicked on the IE icon, the program opened right away and functioned as it's supposed to. Then I enabled the Windows Firewall. I did all that first on my desktop, then went through the same procedure on my wife's laptop. Now everything seems back to normal on both machines.

The odd thing is, I'd uninstalled COMODO from the laptop before and it hadn't fixed the IE problem. The difference? I didn't know about ISE also needing to be uninstalled and that delayed achieving final success.

Thanks to everyone who offered their help. I do appreciate it. I'll now mark the thread Solved.

Great to see you have sorted out the problem/s ;) It proves the point that 3rd. party software does not always work happily with the OS. Sometimes no matter how well it has worked in the past - they can hiccup.:oops:o_O

Just make sure that your Windows firewall is working.

Glad you got it solved. I've never been a fan of 3rd party FW or AV software post Windows XP ;)
