Well it's morning and I'm still stuck on the same update. That's 24 hrs. now. Christer I was silly enough to set it to install all of them while I went out for the day. Geez.

I do system images, but this problem with windows update has been ongoing for so long I can't remember when it wasn't an issue. It's just gotten a lot worse in the last while.

Should I reboot the computer and try again, excluding the monthly Windows Update Client ones? Will this mess up what's already been installed?

How would I know which ones are the WU client updates without looking them all up?

    I have taken notes ... ... :

    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB2990214)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3050265)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3065987)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3075851)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3083324)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3083710)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3102810)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3112343)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3135445)
    Uppdatering för Windows 7 (KB3138612)

I checked my system and the first one, KB2990214, is installed. The title is deceptive:

Update that enables you to upgrade from Windows 7 to a later version of Windows

Maybe the presence of that update is the cuase for my problems after connecting to Windows Update? (Rhetorical question.)

Go to C:\Windows\System32 and scroll down to the file wuauclt.exe. Hover the mouse pointer over it and a popup will show the file version. Post it here and I will probably be able to tell which update you have installed. It will be the most recent update, not all if you have installed several.

The version of wuauclt.exe is 7.6.7601.19046
So where do I go from here? Of course it's still stuck! Do I stop the installation?

I quote Evan from his first post to this thread:

The version on your system indicates that you successfully installed KB3102810 but not KB3138612 which would result in version 7.6.7601.19161.

Over at RADIFIED, I started a thread that became very long. I don't remember but it was probably derailed ... ... :

    Windows 7 and Windows Update

WSUS is recommended but I've never used it myself. Dan knows what he's doing and his ExcludeList is a good start. The ExcludeList should contain all the updates to the Windows Update Client. Scroll down the first page to reply #9 and see if you're up to it?

Personally, I would stop the installation, reset the computer once more to factory fresh and give WSUS a go. You should be able to do it prior to resetting the computer but then do the download to a different drive. Maybe it will get SP1 as well but I have no idea.

(If I had the time, I would install WSUS and test it for you but regrettably not any time soon.)

I ran into this situation a couple of times when updating clean installs of Windows 7 and my solution was to install the updates in smaller batches. So stop the installation, reboot the computer and then install the updates in groups of 30 like I listed in my previous post.

If the update process hangs again then you can follow Christer's advice.

I got fed up and stopped installation and rebooted computer. Then it showed 9 updates ready to download and install. not sure where the rest went.

KB3138612 is showing as successfully installed Christer.

That's a long exclusion list. You did a lot of work.

I'll have to see if anything becomes of these 9 updates supposedly being downloaded and installed. Surely it can handle 9 updates! I'll keep trying small batches Evan.

I've been doing all this in a clean boot state to eliminate something else being the problem.

Not me but Dan Goodell. Just add the WUC updates listed by me in post #22 but the first few of them should alredy be in Dans ExcludeList.

I am happy to report that 256 updates installed and it looks like I'm done until the next round of updates. I'll close this thread and open it again if I have issues on the next round.

    Thanks everyone for your help.
