I have a Netbook that has Windows 7 SP1 Premium Home edition 32 bit. OEM

I was having issues with it and did a system recovery to factory settings. (It came without SP1 installed). Windows update will hang if I try to do updates manually.

If I set windows update to automatic, some updates will install, but I.E. 11 fails. Even downloading I.E. 11 from Microsoft and trying to install doesn't work. It hangs on 'installing necessary updates'. ((I have succeeded in installing SP1 through automatic windows update.)

I tried to do a system restore to after the I.E. 11 install attempt had failed and the system restore failed.

I'm also pretty sure that there are a whole lot more updates that should be installed besides the ones installed when set to automatic.

I tried to run windows update after a clean boot and it still hung.

How do I troubleshoot these issues?

Download the prerequisite updates from Microsoft Download Center and install them manually.

You can check if any of them have been installed but the first update to install is the platform update and a few other updates after that:

    KB2670838
    restart
    KB2912390
    KB3035126 (has to be reinstalled)
    KB3035132 (has to be reinstalled)
    KB3078601 (has to be reinstalled)
    KB3109094 (has to be reinstalled)
    KB3110329 (has to be reinstalled)
    restart

Next, there are prerequisites for IE11 itself:

    KB2729094
    KB2834140
    KB2882822
    KB2888049
    restart

Finally, install IE11 and after a restart (not necessary but I always do it), install the most recent cumulative update, currently KB3148198

    Good luck!

Christer I could not get the KB2670838 Windows standalone installer to run. It just hung for an hour.

I tried to install I.E.11 again just now and it installed required updates and then the browser successfully. I can't remember if I used your link or a copy I had already downloaded.

Now for my windows update hang problem. How do I proceed from here?

Download the SP1 to Desktop and Shutdown comp. Restart in Safe mode with Networking and locate SP1 download and Run. I had to do this on a friends Vista laptop just a few days ago. Neil.

Yes I've tried that. 'An unexpected error has occurred' is what I get.

Good news! Maybe the installation of KB2670838 hung at the request for a restart? No matter what, one way or the other, the prerequisite updates got installed. Otherwise, IE11 would not have installed.

As the saying goes ... ... Ghost (imaging software) users are lousy troubleshooters and I'm one of them.

What I do know is that Windows Update has deteriorated and is very slow compared to previously on Windows 7. There have been several "monthly" updates to the Windows Update Client, the most recent is KB3138612. Try downloading and installing it.

If that doesn't cure the problem or if KB3138612 already is installed on the system, there is a regedit to make Windows Update ignore everything related to the system upgrade to Windows 10 but that's for the next post, if required.

Every time I try to run it I get the windows standalone updater, which hangs. I did a search in the control panel list of updates installed and it did not find this one.

Just as a note, I have not had any nags about upgrading to Windows 10. My system has a Nvidia that does not have a driver compatible with Windows 10, nor do they make an updated one.

I have no idea what would cause this. While I'm thinking, let's hope that someone turns up with a solution.

1st, make sure you have the latest Update client installed:

Do you have any 3rd party AV installed? If so, which one?

Another thing: There are reports that WU is extremely slow on some W7 machines. If you let it run for 24 hours it 'may' sort itself.

It's not installed. I get that standalone windows installer which hangs when I run KB3138612. Is that what I should run for 24 hrs.?

Evan the KB3102810 runs the Windows Standalone installer which hangs.

Why do all these KBs run the windows standalone update installer? None of them have an option to install, just open.

Perform a clean boot in Windows and try installing the updates again. Also, give the updates some time to install. The standalone update installer may take some time to install the update in question so just be patient.

The updates should all install successfully, but if you run into issues you can try installing the updates in batches of 30 each time while rebooting in between.

Evan I'm still stuck on that update. I will leave it overnight. I should have just selected a few at a time but I went out and left it running instead. I'll leave it overnight. What do I do to get out of this stuck place without making a mess of things if it's still stuck in the morning?

    I quote Arie:

I've been barking up this tree before but Windows Update is a total disaster and has been since they started messing with the Windows 10 "promotion ". Windows Update stalling for hours must be considered a huge bug and those responsible taken to the Town Square for some spanking.

I'm a Ghost user and I create a monthly image when the monthly batch of updates have been installed. I can roll back and get rid of unwanted updates quite easily. When I noticed problems with Windows Update, I rolled back my system and since then, I have not installed any of those "monthly updates" to the Windows Update Client.

I always download and install the updates locally and it works like it always has. I can install them all with a single reboot when done.

However, even if I do not update the Windows Update Client, after connecting to the internet and running Windows Update (which happens automatically on a daily basis), something happens that makes a mess of it. After that, when going off line to manually install previously downloaded updates, installing a single update goes well. Installing a second update stalls for up to ½ an hour before it even starts. A reboot between each update makes it faster but why does it happen? I believe that it has something to do with "Trusted Installer ", a process that has to terminate before it can be called again.

Disabling automatic updates "cures" the problem and Windows Update reverts to its normal state when several updates can be installed off line from downloaded files with a single reboot. That doesn't make you, Alicia, any happier becuase that would mean downloading a "ton" of updates to be installed off line, manually.

I believe that the "new modus operandi" of Windows Update that was introduced with Windows 10 is messing up every other operating system in this regard.

Rant mode ... ... off!
