Error when attempting to flush dns cache

Yesterday, I activated a virus in a .rar file because I failed to scan it before unpacking it It hijacked my browser among other nasty things like disabling Task Manager, removing my Programs listing from the Start menu, adding "VIRUS ALERT" to my clock and removing access to Control Panel

Anyway, after several unsuccessful efforts to remove the virus, I was able to get back to a Restore Point from Monday (i.e. 2 days prior). Everything came up fine and I've run a couple of different virus sweeps and they say all is well

HOWEVER, even though my Network Connections shows me connected to the Internet (and the details even shows a few bits "sent" and "received "), all attempts to load a web page (Firefox & IE) return a "cannot find" error. When I try to "repair" the connection Windows XP tells me it can not complete the repair because it could not flush the DNS cache.

My on-line research says this "failure to flush" can be addressed by using a command line "ipconfig /flushdns ", HOWEVER this returns another "flush failed during execution" error message.

Searching on this error message, the Microsoft Knowledge Base says it happens when the DNS Client services are not running, instructing to run "services.msc ", selecting DNS Client and making sure that the Start mode is set to Automatic and the Status shows the service running.

The MS Knowledge Base asserts that once the DNS Client service is running, one can run the "ipconfig /flushdns" command and all will be well. UNFORTUNATELY, that doesn't work for me.

I've insured the service is running but the cache will not flush (I get the same error message) and I still can't bring up a web page. (Obviously, I'm using a different PC to write this post.)

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately, they didn't work.

I first followed all the steps listed in the Microsoft link regarding how to repair an Internet connection. Each step completed successfully, EXCEPT the "ipconfig /flushdns" as it returned the same error I'd received before (i.e. "Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution ").

Sooooo, I next tried the uninstall of my Network Adaptor, rebooting to allow Windows XP Pro to find the devise and reinstall the driver (I also had Windows check to see if a newer driver was available - it is not). After the reboot - I'm still not able to access a webpage though Network Connections continues to show me connected to the Internet AND that my connection is "working properly ".

Anyway, I took the advice to dl "RSIT" (on THIS machine) then transferred it to the problem machine, ran the program and brought the logs back to this PC so I could upload them. Here they are:

I am sorry I wasn't more clear, but the logs need to be posted in a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

As far the DNS problem goes, you may want to run "sfc /scannow" to look for corrupted files. To do this you will need your XP CD. Click start > run and enter "sfc /scannow" in the dialogue box (without quotes). Please note there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow "
