My son uninstalled cyberdefender and installed avast, ran scan, removed found viruses, then restarted computer, now the computer gets as far as the windows xp loading screen then restarts again and keeps doing this, tried to start in safe mode but it does the same thing. I was reading a tread from March 2011 when a member had the same problem and a nice gentleman "PeteC" helped him, but he was able to start in safe mode. PeteC said that he had ideas on what to do if he was not able to start in safe mode and i was hopine i could find out what to do!!!!!! I am new to forums so be nice to me!!!!
    Thanks to everyone that helps!!!!

Hi coreen, Welcome to WindowsBBS :D
When your son uninstalled CyberDefender - had he Downloaded Avast before the uninstall?
If he went out on the internet without an AV safeguard he may have picked up some nasties.
Pete may checkin as time zones do effect a lot of the members. Cheers Neil.

I see you Posted in the previous thread coreen. Stay with this one you have started.
Did you try repeated F8 starts?

Hi coreen, I have just Upgraded to Avast 6.0.1091 on this computer. It has carried out a Restart without any problems.
This new Version has Webguide and Sandbox in its goodies. All OK so far. Neil.;)

My 'other idea' was to use System Restore which can be run from Safe Mode, but this seems to be a non-starter here as you cannot access Safe Mode.

Do you have a retail XP installation CD or a Recovery CD?

    Although ......

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

that is not possible at this time, but if you could post the Make and Model No. of the computer that might be helpful, e.g. Dell Dimension XXX

It's quite possible that the computer is still infected. Windows will automatically restart because there's an unrecoverable error.

If cannot even get to Safe Mode then necessary system files are either infected, damaged, corupted or missing.

Your options at this point are:

    1. remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer as a slave drive or via a usb adapter, then use dskchk on the drive and scan it with different antivirus and antimalware programs.

    2. use a live cd to boot the computer and manually repair. (there are also live cd antivirus)

    3. wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. (do 1 or 2 above to backup your data first)
