Using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, I uninstalled Windows IE, it came off the list, but did not go away. I then uninstalled it as a windows component, but again it is still here. How do I get rid of it?

You cannot uninstall IE - it is an integral part of Windows. The uninstall you made of IE7 or greater would roll you back to the previous version.

It is XP with IE6. Since I can't remove it, I will try to re-install the same version to correct some annoying problems.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :) - we would then know which Service Pack you are running :)
If you are not running SP3 I strongly recommend that you install it.

IE 6 is full of security holes - for your own safety you should upgrade to IE8 - note IE9 is not compatible with XP.

None of the fixes worked for me. I want to upgrade and tried that already. but the IE6 problems remained. Often IE disappears right after launch, always puts a simtgikebq.tmp file on the desktop, and often encounters a problen and needs to shut down even before being used.

We still don't know which Service Pack you are running - that is important.
That is very suspicious - no reference to that file name with or without the .tmp on Google which makes me think that malware may be at work here.

I suggest you head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum, and read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in a new thread.

It is SP3 with way over 100 automatic security updates.
I tried system restore to 2 weeks before the problem and did Avast deep scan more than once to no avail.
I am off to follow your malware instructions.
    Thanks everyone.

Yea, if you still run IE6, you got a 99.9% probability of getting infected!

It is SP3 with all updates.
I used the anti-malware tool that found many infections and now the suspicious file on the desktop is gone
IE still shuts down or needs to be closed as before.
    Any further ideas?

So you got the easy stuff out... good chance there are still infections lurking.

As suggested, post the requested logs in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

I don't think you really want me to post the log as it is 96KB.
I would like to abandon IE6 in place and install IE8 in a different folder. I know it doesn't offer that option like other browsers. Is there a way to fool IE8?

For now, abandon the idea of doing anything with IE until the malware has been completely removed, else you will likely render the system and IE unusable. Please follow the suggestions re malware.
