Resolved BSOD problems "randomly"

Intel's site says its included in my mobo's bios updates. My board's bios as of right now (aka before doing a clean install) is running the 904 update.

45-50c is cool for a quad core even 60-70c is still cool. I had said that BEFORE I managed to get my heatsink repaired that it would idle at around 65-70c and with a full load hit as high as 105c.

I checked before and just now on kingston's site but they have nothing of any use.

The crashes when they happen, happen when im A.) downloading using torrent. or 2.) Downloading online (ftp sites/ youtube ect ect). The First one happened in fact on youtube while watching a cs clip or w/e.

overclocked @ 3ghz. FSB is 1600 (mobo does support this) ram is running 80mhz over "rated" value due to system's clock as reported by cpuz. FSB to DRAM ratio is 5:6 timings are 5 5 5 18 (untouched from factory).

 

Only downloading? Areas I would investigate:
malware (mentioned I think)
network drivers, I usually just uninstall all the network drivers in Device Manager and reboot, the drivers are reinstalled automatically. Where have you sourced the drivers from?
Firewall, could more than one firewall be running? Is Windows firewall turned off if you have a third party fiewall? Those programs you mention might not use standard networking ports.

I came in late to the thread. If I am off-course let me know, I will need to re-read the thread in depth.

Is Kingston RAM the new modules? They should list your motherboard model and suggest compatible types.

I've already A.) Scanned using kaspersky, spybot, and win. defender. All came up clean. B.) Done a complete format twice and crashed (bsod) after getting online and downloading using utorrent. (though before it was using bitcomet.) BSOD started a little before my comp hit 1 year old. I have crashed before with av turned off, both firewalls turned off, each firewall turned off.

I know everyone suspects malware/virus so I wont close that outa my mind, and am willing to post any logs or run any scanners that you suggest. Id rather be proven wrong and get this fixed then have to spend 600 on new parts. (I have been looking at new parts and found a NICE new mobo and ram for a decent price.

I only connect to the internet 1 way and thats via a netgear adapter. Before getting this adapter (who i suspect is the cause of this due to bs drivers) I was using a linksys adapter for almost a year with out any crashes though it would suddenly think it wasnt connected out of the blue.

(I have my ethernet port disabled via my mobo's bios which is how i had it set when my comp was new)

The netgear adapter works really well when I managed to get a vista driver installed for it 5 (give or take) months back w/o a hitch then suddenly after a month or two I started crashing.

While doing a fresh install of all my drivers I noticed that my av gave me a notification. Something about an XP driver being installed when installing my adapter's driver.

Kaspersky does come with a firewall but it disables window's firewall on install. I (as i said) have tried using just kp's firewall and just window's firewall but neither had an effect.

Which ones exactly? Yahoo instant messanger could also be a suspect but ive crashed many a time with it closed, but then again it also started around the time (not exactly but aroundish) when I downloaded the new 9.0 version (not beta).

The kingston's are the ones that have been with the system since its built date. KS's site suggests nothing. My mobo manual does not list the EXACT model as compatible but Kingston is listed as well as its ram size (2g modules). And have been running like swiss clock work for atleast 10 or so months. And every memory test I can run says that they are good except intel's burn test 2.(3?) but it also tests cpu. I have my doubts about a bad cpu or ram cuz ive run prime95 for 18hrs WHILE downloading before I started crashing with out any problems detected. But if anything has taught me well anything its that you cant rule out anything.

 

one thing if its a virus but thus far nothing I have scanned with has detected any virus/malware/trojans/worms/ ect ect ect. If you suspect that I am indeed infected with something causing my crashes then please, i would be MORE then willing to run any kind of scans that you would be kind enough to suggest to prove that im not infected OR that I am and to remove said infection. While it is entirely possible that i could be, all results have said i am not. Which leads to the conclusion that its A.) a driver problem or B.) A hardware problem. All hardware scanners I have run checking my hard-drives, ram, cpu have returned clean other then intel burn-in test 2.3 which states that my system is not stable. I have done a clean install twice since this started each time with the most up-to-date drivers I can find on each of my comp's component's manufacture's sites.

Ran a malwarebytes scan (since mb is mentioned on the site several times) and only got one hit which after google'ing is actually a false positive.

idea* could somehow an odd port used for downloading cause crashes? I left my comp on downloading (which usally crashes my comp) during the night and it was still fine. Later i noticed that in utorrent my set port was no longer being forwarded due to having a different IP then i should. Any ideas?

It talks about opening ports, disabling firewalls and antiviruses, also reading in the setup instructions for the torrent programs.

If you have "automatic updates" set for your drivers, security suite or maybe Vista, that's where things could be going wrong. Kaspersy has had update problems in the past.

I can't see what version of Windows those drivers are compatible with. There are various models and they can apply with different firmware requirements/updates. Does the adapter have Network Address Translation (NAT). Do you need to make port settings for that? (Not sure if you have mentioned it.)

If you use a "wizard" to set up the adapter, when there is a glitch, the settings can be lost. Look in the manual and check the FAQs for the adapter.

There seems to be quite a few factors/possibilities involved.

Im gunna try limiting connections to 60 and change the port to 6969 perhapes.

Everything I have on my comp is set to manual update, or at the very least set to alert me when updates are available but not to download anything.

5.2 says its for vista x64.

my adapter doesnt allow firmware updates or at least I cant find out how to update the firmware on it. And just to point out its just an adapter not a router.

only "wizard" is the wi-fi app which I dont use for connections as it "seems" to cause crashes faster. Vista's wifi app does the trick.

 

doing those changes helped a little, the crashes arnt as frequant now but im still crashing. nwifi.sys seems to be named a LOT more (90% of the crashes now) in the bs when it appears. BS view however sites these on the .dmps.

now just wondering. Netgear also installed another driver (besides my adapter's driver) which is being used for networking. MARVELL EAP Driver, doing a google search says that its a wi-fi driver, but its not needed? Seems its for WAP or w/e. Since I dont use security or encryption disabling or uninstalling this driver would be okay right? I will try it disabled and see if anything bad happens .

Side note I have win 7 in a dual boot configuration now. Think it would be possible to run a .dmp decompiler or whatever its called to help solve the problem in win 7? Given the fact that no actual crashes on win 7.

running sfc /scannow gave me a message saying i have corrupted system files that cant be repaired if that means anything for ^-- the above (ie bsod's not the hardware bit)

I needed to make a folder C:\Symbols. I can't remember if I downloaded the symbols separately, you can though.

It's a little technical, but basically you tell the debugging tool (Windgb) where to find the symbols, then which dump to open.

Dumps usually specify two files, so the sometimes the three or so you talk about baffles me a little.

You need to fill in with more details

• You don't mention the model of the adapter. (Have you looked at the FAQs?)
• Have you reformatted since Arie suggested it? Could drivers from your previous network adapter still be around (look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features)
• I am unclear how your network is set up. What does the adapter connect to, a router, a wireless modem? Those things will have NAT which might need to be configured.

If you don't use encryption on your wireless network, anyone in a short range can connect to it.

Have you checked the setup suggestions at the BitTorrent websites?

Your old adapter "stopped working ", now this one appears to be causing problems.

If a third party program is causing it (eg, maybe the BitTorrent programs and what wants to run the Proxy?), the program supplier needs to advise you.

Malware can "stuff" your network/internet connection, although it may not be malware, but just what I call a junk program, where you agree to any of it's "malfunctions" when you tick that box during installation (and you might be agreeing to spyware, so it is not termed malware). Arie suggested trying without the BitTorrent programs. (Are there any others you might suspect?)

We both mentioned hardware. Me, I wouldn't like the thought of the CPU running for any time at or around 100*C (RAM could be getting overheated as well).

Here we are generally involved with "standard" systems. Overclocking and BitTorrents is not standard.

If you reformat, does it happen immediately? You will need to go step-wise after a reformat. See when it starts to happen (test extensively). We can't be expected to say, make your BitTorrent or firewall programs work. You need to research them yourself.

I d/l'ed the dbger pre format number 2 along with the symbols, but it said it couldnt find the symbols even when i pointed it right at the symbol folder.

  I know, but it appears to be a vista problem as its been like that since I got the computer. Some times it will run perfect then all of a sudden I will have to restart a few times inorder to get back online.

  Well, i was not in controll of how crapply my heatblock was put together, when i took my system apart to see why it runs so hot i found out the waterblock wasnt put together right (was missing a ***** in the bottom preventing full contact). AFTER i put a ***** and reapplied as5 my temps dropped to 45c idle and 70c(HIGHEST temps under the highest load i can put at it).
  
  As far as ram, i dont know how warm/hot it is. My case is an nzxt tempest.

  No, only crash once i get online in some form or another and even then its not immediate. Every crash ive had its been when i was online, but its not like when i connect online I crash right when i open a browser or start downloading or something. Its pretty random, i could have utorrent closed and using firefox to just surf the web reading news sites or watching youtube videos and I can crash. or versly i could be downloading w/o ff open and crash. When im downloading i crash more often then when im just surfing the net. Its even more true if i use netgear's wi-fi connection app. Sometimes ive gone 3 days with out a crash downloading and surfing the net, other times ive cant go more then 20mins with out crashing.

I know you didn't mean for the overheating to happen, just keep at the back of your mind that there could be damage. If all other possibilities are ruled out, maybe look more closely at it.

Your internet connection, you have no control over it. I know "free" wireless internet access will allow you unlimited surfing and email, but no downloading. You might be getting blocked. You will only have control over your own internet connection.

Drivers, I always go back to the drivers supplied with the device if I suspect them. Are you installing all the motherboard drivers (and checking at the motherboard's website for updates) after you reformat. Dare I say it, you might want to follow what Windows Updates are being installed. Are you going through Service Pack upgrades?

As I said, go step-wise. Swap things out if you can. Look at using different BitTorrent programs (check their recommended settings).

Your internet is suspect. If I hooked into unlocked wireless connections I would play by the rules. Mega downloads (and related uploads) would be out as well YouTube. It is sucking a lot of somebody else's bandwidth, etc. I know it is not cheap, but...

You can see there are a lot of variables. I (we) are giving you possibilities. To be honest, the way you work your internet, I wouldn't be surprised at crashes happening.

ive been using BSview actully. And i also dl'ed windows debugger and the symbol pack again, but it halts mid way saying something along the lines of " can not read symbol of wn111.sys" (which is my router's driver).

So which should i use? inorder to use bsview i need mini dumps, and inorder to use the debugger i need to have kernel dumps. Which would be best?

Thats all the crashes read out by bsview. all the "sites" were the objects highlighted in red. And like an idiot i just deleted all my dumps (about 12 mini dumps). Right now i have it set to save full kernal dumps on crash. Most the bsod's gave nwifi.sys as cause, bsview again sited the above. So which would be best to help find out the problem, mini dumps or kernal dumps since i have both bsview and win. debugger.
