Mike, I'll take care of the cleanups now but will wait until I get home from work to do the upgrade. Gotta head out to work in about two hours.

I'll post when I get started and when I finish.

    Mike,

    SP3 installed without a hitch.

I had to test it. Started Spybot S&D. It crashed.:(

    Oh well.

    Morning Mitch

    Time for a different route.

Locate the Via and NIC updates you downloaded earlier so you will have them for later.

Then uninstall from Add/Remove the Via software and the NIC software if any in Add/Remove.

Then in Device mgr uninstall the NIC it will reinstall on reboot. I say this because Spybot runs OK in safe mode non network so it may be something to do with that.

If there are issues then you may need to reinstall using the above software.

    Success!!!!

    Mike,

I must pay homage to you somehow. I tried it twice and no crashes. Jim will be quite pleased.

With the generic video drivers though the scroll is a slow refresh...who cares, it's not crashing:D

Mike, forget what I just said. I was reading posts on WindowsBBS, then decided to give Spybot one more try.........It crashed again.

    This is so frustrating

OK Great but lets not stop here we need to do some finalizing!

Go to system properties and turn off System Restore to clear old possibly bad restore data. Reboot once run Ccleaner and Atf-cleaner then reacitvate System Restore and do a fresh restore point.

Then run the Erunt and create a registry backup.

OK are you still running under msconfig clean boot! If so reverse that back to normal.

The issue was probably fixed by the NIC procedure so reinstall the VIA updates.

Reboot once again and test. If it works your Video should now be back to normal and also if it works the issue was in fact the NIC Driver.

The only thing I did was go to WindowsBBS and browse posts. I don't remember if I closed IE7 beforehand or not.

Make a mental note of post #88 as that is what we need to do when it is finished.

    Close all browser connections.

Go to Local Area Connection properties, click Disable. This will kill the network and internet.

To put this back later do the same but click Enable.

Now run Spybot again to see if it runs OK now.

    Mike,

Spybot appears to load just fine with the NIC disabled. I tried it three times just to be sure.

    All Righty!!

    We have pinpointed the Gremlin!

OK tell me the brand and model of the NIC! Is it an onboard NIC or a PCI card?

And go ahead with the VIA reinstall! The Erunt, and reverse the msconfig clean boot.

And try one more spbot test.
Reboot with NIC enabled and do no internet do not update or anything.

Find out if it runs more than once as long as network or internet has not been accesses. Which may be what happened when you thought it was fixed.

OK we need a model number!

Tell me what the properties on the NIC in device manager says.

Then go into the BIOs and see what info it has as far as neme etc.

    Get that to me.

But here is the plan when we are sure we have the correct model.

We are going to uninsatall the NIC from Device Mgr.

Then reboot not allow it to get back into windows hit the f2 or Del to go into the BIOS and disable the onboard NIC.

Then boot to Safe mode run a CCleaner registry clean to clean out the settings for the NIC.

boot to normal mode with it still disabled run cclean again

then reboot back to BIOS renable the onboard NIC

then let it reinstall on boot (will need the drivers).

Sorry for the jumble of info.

Ran Spybot right after reboot. Started fine. Closed it. Started again - crash.

Properties in Devmgr does not show a model number. I guess I'm stupid...point me in the right direction
