BSOD after system setting idle for 8 hours

Mattman,

Dusted the system. Set TIF to minimum.

Activity dies down within a minute of startup. CPU activity drops to 0-4 percent.

One odd thing that keeps coming up is this:

I am only running Windows Firewall for now. But when I start up - after about a minute or so I get the balloon stating no firewall is on. then the bubble goes away. When I check the security center - firewall is on

I won't bloat the thread with dump logs after this one. I think everyone gets the picture. But this time i think it was about to "turn off the monitor" when it crashed. Im going to let it sit idle until it tries to turn off the monitor - if it crashes I'll just turn that option off.

I don't have any "Known good RAM" to try in this system. The system owner told me to just start looking for a new mobo and RAM for it but I hate leaving something unfinished. There has to be a way to resolve this......

Looking at all these, I'm somewhat inclined to say you probably have a very messed up driver floating around. You said you updated the video driver already - can you try just running with the default windows vga driver and see how things go?

 

Yes, I can. I am willing to try anything to get this machine to stop driving me nuts.

Ok, maybe I can't. No mater what I do it reverts back to the Via driver - help?

 

Yes, updated the graphics drivers which I got from the viaarena website. Also updated the chipset driver from the same site.

Motherboard is a Jetway with a Via Unichrome KM266Pro Chipset and Via/S3 Unichrome IGP video adaptor.

Repair install will be much cheaper my friend than a new board and ram. Will definitely try that first. His XP CD is the one that came with the computer back when it was still a Dell.

So far, only one more crash since 5-18-08 at 7:40a.m. wierd enough it was at 7:40a.m. 5-19-08. Will have my friend bring his XP cd to work tonight and do a repair install when I get home. He is prepared to buy some new RAM - if just to eliminate that as the culprit.

I am with Pete I don't like unresolved issues either.

My advice on the repair install? I think Pete will agree!

It is not good to use a major update like a SP to fix a problem, it just might be the thing that fowls up the SP3 install and the OS possibly resulting in a worse problem up to and including an unbootable system.

I would take the time to do the repair install and see if you can resolve this issue first.

I nothing works to resolve it, then it is time to cross your fingers and do the SP3.

ok, normally I would be embarrassed to admit I don't know what I am doing....

Repair install starts the recovery console - I have never used the recovery console and I am not sure what I am supposed to fix.

Can you point me in the right direction? I'm a fast learner

Or am I just re-installing windows? There is nothing on the computer that needs keeping - he is having me clean/fix this to give to his neice.

Repair install is complete. Should I wait a while before downloading SP2, just to see how the system reacts, or go ahead with sp2 and watch what happens?

the IoCallDriver() interface, but there are no more stack locations in the
