Is it the flat cable which should be changed?

Serial ATA (SATA) cables are generally round - completely unlike the flat ribbon cables for IDE (PATA) drives and IDE optical drives.

According to an earlier post you said you had SATA RAID.

Sorry to have to ask the obvious but are we connected to the hard drive or motherboard? Just experienced something peculiar. On the rear of the drive are two multi-connectors. One is flat the other has about 6-8 coloured wires. Whilst i felt on the smaller one, a click could be heard and a very faint high pitched hum which lasted about one second. This repeated itself exactly whenever i just lightly checked the connection.

    Jules.

The SATA data cable connects the drive to the controller on the motherboard.

My mind must have been elsewhere - although you can get round SATA cables the majority are flat - see attachments.
Indicative of a poor connection - by smaller one I guess you mean the data cable. This may be the source of the problem and a replacement cable is in order.

OK, that clearly is not a SATA drive, but rather the older (PATA) version!

As Arie comments that is an EIDE (PATA) drive, but where did you get this info from - post #6 ....
So as a follow on from a previous post of mine ....
to which can be added ....
    From .....

Getting BIOS not installed message as computer boots.

Not quite clear if you are able to enter the BIOS (Setup) - that looks to be the key.
the smaller one being the power cable as opposed to the flat ribbon cable? Your PSU should have a number of spare molex power connectors - try switching to another. I would also consider replacing the ribbon cable - it's pretty old and doesn't liik exactly in the prime of health from the photo - no guarantees, but your other problems may result from a dodgy cable. Impossible to be definitive - it's a case of trial and error, but you need to substitute the power cable first, then sort out the BIOS and finally, if necessary replace the ribbon cable.

The PC was bought with the relevant CD´s and user manuals. The two manuals next to me are Serial ATA Raid/Serial ATA and RZ Series Motherboard 8S661FXM-RZ SiS 661 FX chipset.

We are not saying that your motherboard does not have Serial ATA Raid/Serial ATA capability - just that your drive is EIDE (PATA) connected to the IDE port.

To clarify my mobo - Asus A8N-SLI Premium has 8 SATA connectors, 2 RAID controllers AND 3 IDE connectors - 2 for hard drives/opticals and 1 for floppy. I have 4 SATA drives none of which are in RAID. Equally well I could run off IDE drives and ignore the SATA connections and controllers completely.

However, you appear to have a Gigabyte RZ 8S661FXM-RZ with SIS 661FX chipset - the specifications suggest that this is an IDE board - no SATA and the illustration shows no SATA connections.

This gets more and more peculiar.
As you requested i have entered my system details. However as you can see the installed Motherboard is MSI yet i have the literture and CD for RZ Series as i wrote earlier. Do i sense a conflict?

Yes, it seems you don't have the correct manuals. Open the PC & see if you can verify the make/model of the motherboard.

Your URL leads to a sign in page on MySpace UK

However I located your manual here ....

    http://www.retrevo.com/search/v2/jsp/mytrevo/myTrevo.jsp?page=man

    and downloaded it.....
So the board does support SATA, but your drive is EIDE (PATA).

    BIOS setup details are given.
    Where are you seeing that?

The link was meant to show the MSI Motherboard, also you could see the plugs for SATA 1 and 2 plus IDE3.

Started by entering Setup Utility. Chose "Integrated Peripherals" enter, and there you have your choice of VT8237 PATA-IDE Controller or VT8237 SATA-IDE Controller.

But in the present situation would that not be pointless, as it cannot see the BIOS anyway?

OK - I got to your latest image via your first URL - the SATA connectors are clearly not in use.

You are in the BIOS also referred to as Setup on some motherboards.
    Page 3-20 attached .....

As you have a PATA drive check that the options under OnBoard PCI Controller are disabled - leave the audio enabled ....
    Read again post #27

It does not matter if the
is enabled or disabled, but the
    must be enabled

    SATA/RAID problem.

No longer getting the "BIOS not found" msg. however i am still getting the

"The procedure entry point not found. Get controller Num@@ YAEXZ could not be located in the dynamic link library drvInterface.dll"

It seems to be looking for RAID. Have i forgotten something?

    Jules.

Reading through BIOS section of the manual again ......

Check, from my last post ......
I suggest you disable the SATA controller (Post #38) and see if that eliminates the error message. If it is already disabled the only further suggestion I have is to update the Chipset drivers ......

    http://www.viaarena.com/displaydrivers.aspx?PageID=1&OSID=1&CatID=1070
Your chipset is the VIA K8T800 ...

    From here ....
