    Hey there,

I'm entirely new to this forum and hope to learn lots. Pretty sure that's not a problem, there's lots of information around here.

Just encountered something I've never seen before. My Windows firewall asks whether I want to unblock 'dllcache' or not. Not knowing what 'dllcache' entitles, I choose to keep it blocked.

Questions that I have regarding this issue:
    1. What is it?
    2. Is it safe to unblock or does it need to stay blocked?
    3. If it needs to get unblocked, how to do so?

    Thanks in advance!
    Daniel

Hi Daniel, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Read this, The Windows XP Dllcache Folder.

I would unblock the entry from the Windows Firewall as the dllcache folder is a vital part of the Windows Operating System thats used for protecting your system files from modifications.

To add an exception to Windows Firewall so that it doesn't keep blocking the program read this, Using Windows Firewall.

BTW where is the dllcache file located in your computer?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Thanks for the info.

I just ticked off the 'dllcache' within the Windows firewall.

When I do a search for 'dllcache', it comes up as 'DLLCACHE.EXE-218D9F50.pf' located in 'C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch'. I read that there's an actual dllcache folder and an unwanted dllcache.exe.

Hope all is well with the given information.

You should block dllcache, then start a new thread in the Removing Malware forum here.

Ther dll cache is just that, a cache of dll files. Sort of like backupos. Dllcache.exe has no business connecting to the Internet and most likely your comp has a backdoor trojan infection.

So, I'm guessing since it did ask to block or unblock dllcache that it is infected eh?

How come though? I just System Restored Windows. What I did notice during the installation of Service Pack 2, that dllcache was unresponsive with a 'sorry for the inconvenience' note ... send/don't send error. Could this have anything to do with what the issue is here?

You could have already been infected before you even installed Service Pack 2. Also System Restore may not have removed the infected file when you restored your system.

Its obvious that you have picked up some kind of malware infection so like everyone else has said you should post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum. You could very easily be infected with other viruses as well since if there is one trojan that has infected your machine there is a high chance that more could have snuck into your system.

That's shitty to hear, but very helpful information. Thanks for all the inputs.

I do have a copy of Windows XP and want to do a clean installation anyhow. Formatting the HD gets rid of everything I suppose. Would that be another solution?

Sorry for the many 'straight forward' questions. I just want to make sure.

A full rather than quick reformat of the hard drive will wipe everything well enough for the purposes of a fresh install.

Certainly a solution and would save our hard pressed malware analysts unnecessary work.

It's your decision, but please do not make use of their valuable time in sorting out your probable infection and then immediately formatting :)

No, I fully understand! I'm already confused with most of the stuff we're talking about haha ... let alone figuring out someone else his/her computer problems. I appreciate the helpful responses.

Whatever decision you decide to make is fine with us. Just let us know if you are going to be formatting the machine or starting a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum. ;)

Ok then. Make sure that you back up all of your data that you want to save before you format the machine.

If you have any questions about formatting your system don't hesitate to ask. ;)
