I am using Windows XP. My programs have been getting more and more difficult to load. I click on the program (Firefox, Quicken, Explorer, Picassa etc) and the hourglass goes for like two seconds, then nothing. It won't open. If I shut down, the computer says "Do you need to close these programs before shutting down" or something like that. Many times I have to completely reboot, then try again. Sometimes this works, but it is taking so long. If they DO load, after I am done, when I come back to the computer, they will no longer run. I have tried scanning for virii, I have tried the malware scanners. I have tried shutting down some of the programs in the MSCONFIG at startup. This is getting worse and worse.

What can I do? Am I infected?

Well, MSCONFIG is only meant for testing purposes. Have you deleted Temp files etc? Lets do this the easy way. Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup. When it opens, put a check in ALL the boxes and let it Delete files or OK. Not at a XP Machine now so not sure what it says.

Then go to the same place you got the Disk Cleanup and click on Disk Defrag this time. Then do it. Report back and let us know if it is any better.

The next suggestion that I have after that if it isn't, is go to the Malware section and run and post the scans there that are asked for.

Hi chinaclipper. Have you tried booting the computer into Safe Mode to see if you can open any programs there?

Before we determine if its a malware infection, I would run Check Disk on the hard drive first, How to run Check Disk on Windows XP.

After Check Disk has finished running, see if you can open those programs that you mentioned in Normal Mode.

What Admin meant was to go to User CP near the top left and enter some of your system info. Look at My System below my stuff on the left and also Admins and Evan's to get an idea of what to put in there.

    Thanks.

I see you ran a check disk, so are programs opening now?

    What anti-virus are you running?

I am using the AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 2013 Version 2013.0

I did ran checkdisk. It literally took 4 hours. Programs maybe a bit faster to load, but I noticed I tried to change websites last night, and it says "Connecting" for like 15 minutes. I finally went to bed....
    Frustrating...
Also, may or may not be related, every time I have to reboot, I have to re-enter into my control panel, and reset the audio, because it goes to "0 ". I have to set it back up to 10. Weird.

I am currently running the malware scan, I will upload the log when I get home tonight later.

One thing you haven't answered yet is were you able to boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if the programs ran properly? See if you can connect to websites normally from Safe Mode with Networking as well.

If you are still having problems running programs in Normal Mode then it definitely sounds like your system could have some malware infections present on it.

So can you successfully run programs in Normal Mode or are you still getting some spotty behavior with your system?

If running Check Disk did not help to resolve the problem then I would make sure your computer is free of any malware infections before we troubleshoot your issue further.

Please read this and post a new thread in the Malware and Virus Removal Forum.
