    The Windows XP DOS CD wouldn't boot. Any suggestions?

    Check your boot order in BIOS - CD-ROM must be first in the list.

    It is.

    As you may know, Seagate SeaTools hard drive testing software comes in two forms:

    SeaTools for Windows is a program that installs on your Windows system. You can do basic and advanced testing of any kind of drive - internal or external - from any manufacturer.

    SeaTools for DOS supports Seagate or Maxtor drives and runs independent from your operating system on its own CD or disk, making it highly reliable.

    A SeaTools for DOS CD is in the works.

    You posted that you had a Western Digital Hard Drive - you need Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from WD - as linked to in Evan's post above - NOT Seatools.

    A Lifeguard Diagnostics DOS and Wizard + WinPE Bootable CD are in the works.

    On another note, although the WD 1.5TB drive is in warranty (replacement), I'm considering purchasing a Seagate 250GB drive. From the get go, the WD drive proved problematic, the myriad symptoms that initially led me to replace the Seagate initially, were still present. Could those issues be related to how the OS was installed?

    Factory: Seagate 250GB
    Up leveled: WD 1T.5TB

    Can you detail the symptoms ? _ I doubt it is an OS problem, more likely hardware - mobo, but without detail of the issues you encountered impossible to say.

    Does the BIOS recognise the full size of the WD drive?

    Symptoms: Slow access times: two to three minutes to launch Firefox, IE...frequent freeze-ups, occasional redirection to inappropriate pages and error messages. All the core components were checked when the OS was installed.

    How do I determine if the BIOS is recognising the full size of the WD drive?

    When the computer boots up you should see on the splash screen words to the effect of .... 'Press xx to enter setup (the BIOS)' where xx is commonly F1 or Del.

    The first screen should show a list of connected drives - highlighting a drive and pressing Enter should bring up details of the drive.

    A formatted 1 TB drive should show a size of ~931 GB

    If you fill in your System Details in full it would be easier to help you - see here

    If you do not have an XP CD how did you install XP on the new drive ??

    If you used an image or cloned the drive it seems to me that you transferred your issues from the old drive to the new.

    The redirection to inappropriate web sites is a sign of malware - do you recall any of the detail of the error messages?

    If you go into the BIOS it should tell you the capacity of the hard drive. Let us know what it says. Were you getting those same symptoms with the Seagate hard drive or only with the Western Digital hard drive?

    I haven't followed this thread closely, but the above suggests Malware.

    Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

    Pete, it appears that the WD drive wasn't formatted (see System Details).

    A local technician installed the OS.

    No, they were all Print Scrn'd and saved in Word.

    The system was scanned for Malware, it was clean.

    That's the one - have you checked your boot order in BIOS? The CD-ROM drive must be the first boot device in order to boot from a CD

    CD-ROM > Hard Drive >>

    Yes, the CD-ROM drive is the first boot device in BIOS and is functional.

    On another note, if necessary, I'll be using an EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard WinPE 5.8.5 CD to recover files. How can I ensure that any Malware/viruses are not?

    As the DOS version appears not to work for you try the Windows version which will run from within Windows.
    You can't. If a file is infected the malware will be recovered along with the file - Arie suggested several posts back that you head over to the Malware & Virus Removal forum and I suggest you do that as a matter of urgency.

    Pete, the windows CD wouldn't boot either. I've used the EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard WinPE 5.8.5 CD to recover files. Via WD warranty service the failed drive is being replaced. The computer mentioned uses a 512 K sector size so an optimal replacement will be another Seagate 250 - 750GB. Thank you again for the time and energy you invested in moving me forward. Much appreciated...;)
