I boot from the CD, but before it asks me if I want to install/use recovery console/etc, I get BSOD'd with 0x0000007B. Looking it up, that means I have an inaccessible boot device.

This strikes me as odd. I can boot into normal windows just fine. But it's not letting me load off the CD. This is the second XP CD that I've attempted to use, in case that was the boot device they were referring to, with the same error.

Can anyone offer some suggestions, please?

    Hello,

Seems like kfldqpob.sys caused the crash which don't have any reference anywhere.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers and rename kfldqpob.sys to kfldqpob.old and reboot the System once.

Then download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ reboot the System in Safe Mode run a complete scan it could be a possible infection since there is no reference of driver anywhere on the Internet.

Then Run a Hardware Diagnostic (Memory and Hard Drive) follow this link for instructions

Report us back with the results,

Pete, would you also like me to rename the file and reboot, as Sparrow suggested, or ONLY follow the anti-malware recommendations?

The purpose of this troubleshooting is to boot into a Windows installation CD and format the hard drive (and any signs of virus activity) for a clean installation.

Try Captain Jack's suggestion by all means, but filenames which are not found on Google are always highly suspicious.

    Hello,

I would recommend to follow Pete's recommendation. Renaming Driver would just deactivate if it's a Virus., You could really use an Malware expert in this situation.

    Good Luck !

OTOH if you intend to reformat immediately I think Capt Jack's suggestion may save you a lot of time and the valuable time of our stretched malware analysts - if it works.

The driver Jack named was not present. I continued forward with Malwarebytes, and came up with 1 false positive (it was monitoring software we use here), and came back otherwise clean. I am now running memtest86+ and will follow up with a hard drive diagnostic.

It only has to be good enough to run the windows installation CD from. I considered running DBAN or even just a live distro to dd the disk, but thought this could be a learning experience, since I have the luxury of time with this machine.

If you're still willing to help walk me through this, thank you. If not, we can mark it as resolved, and I'll use a stronger tool to just zero the drive out and build up from that.

Memtest came back clean. And neither of the check disk commands created any errors I saw (I ran /c for the drive and /f to fix, as the linked instructions above told me to). Afterwards, I went to device manager and found my hard drive model (wd1600aajs) and downloaded the Data Lifeguard CD for DOS.

It said something about loading and booting Caldera DR-DOS, and then went to a black screen. The diagnostic utility did not load, and neither, it seems, did the rest of the system. If I remove the CD, the computer boots properly into windows.

I am having trouble getting the ocia site to load. Is there a text version available? Or are the instructions available on a mirror?

The first set of instructions loaded as soon as you posted the alternative. I used the first set.

But as the windows text installer (same as you see when using the CD) started loading everything, the computer went BSOD with the same 7B stop code.

Removed the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, and it did reset everything. Recounted the memory and I had to reset the date.

However, when running the Windows install CD, it BSOD'd again with the 7B stop code.
