Explorer Always Stops on Sunday

Windows XP Home, Sp 3, all updates.

For the past few months I have been trying to fix a problem which only happens on Sunday.

Each Sunday morning, when I start the computer it works fine. Then, when I shut down and start up again or restart the computer locks up at the desktop. No messages. Folders will open, but nothing will execute. When Task Manager is opened, nothing in particular shows, but the taskbar disappears and the only way to start it again is to do a hard restart. The computer will stay locked up after reboots until restored with Acronis.

Safe Mode works OK. The mystery to me is that if Explorer is corrupted in Windows, why not in Safe Mode? Apparently something in Windows starts on a Sunday and keeps running when Windows is started, thereafter. Recently I discovered that exefix_xp.com, when copied to the desktop got things going again, but I will have to wait a week to find out if it works again. But that’s not a fix. If whatever is running and stopping Explorer, why doesn’t it "recorrupt" after exefix_xp.com?

I have been working with msconfig, Startup Delayer, ShellxView and Codestuff Starter to try to stop functions during startup but have had no luck so far. These programs give somewhat different results, so it is difficult to decide which to stay with because anything I try takes a week to find out if it works. I have also used Ccleaner and chkdsk with no results.

Acronis will get me running for another week.

I’ve looked through all the software that I can find which updates on Sunday. I found a couple and stopped them but it didn’t help.

I use Avast! and have run AdAware, Spybot, AVG and Malwarebytes but found nothing.

My theory is that "something" happens on a Sunday which corrupts Explorer, and Explorer will remain corrupted until fixed.

It has occurred to me to locate every file listed in msconfig, Startup Delayer, ShellxView and Codestuff Starter which has not been stopped and try running it to see if it will stop Explorer, but that’s a big task and I don’t know if this is a good idea or not.

I would appreciate any suggestions which will help me put a stop to this very annoying problem.

    Thank you

I agree with RSInfo, what tasks have you scheduled for Sunday's?

    Thanks for the response.

I don’t have any scheduled backups or anything intentionally updated. I use Diskeeper which functions every day and I unchecked the “Automatic…weekly update…” Avast! scans when opening and I think it checks for updates daily.

I found that DivX updated on Sunday, but I disabled that. Windows Defender updated on Sunday and I deleted it entirely because of a possible conflict with Avast

There's something else which may or not be related. Once in a while (every few days or so) I will get a message that says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close ". After checking that away nothing else happens and Explorer continues to work OK.

After letting the computer sit idle for a while (on screen saver) it came up with one of those "Explorer has encountered a problem...etc ". Following that window, I got to 52d6_appcompat.txt. Here is a copy of the text file:

The event viewer showed two application errors today, but no info as to what caused them. According to the time listed, these are probably the ones that caused the Explorer window. There were 8 system errors, all occurring about the time of my initial bootup this morning. Six were "Service Control Manager" and two were DCOM.

Please enter your system details - that will help those who are trying to help you.

Can you copy the newest of the events and post them here?

You might want to download the newest version of the drivers for WinTV7 as well.

    I entered system details.

Don't exactly know what you mean by "events ". I've posted everything I can think of or obtain.

WinTV7 was not operating correctly when first installed. (No sound on lower channels). The tech rep walked me through installation of latest software/drivers. It works fine.

    System Details are not displaying:

In Event Viewer there should be a selection to copy with each event. That is what i was looking for. It should look something like this:

I didn’t check "yes" on the system specs menu. Sorry "˜bout that. Should be ok now.

My Administrative Tools-Event Viewer looks nothing like you have shown. I wish there was a way to send an attachment so I could show you. My EV window shows 5 categories: Application, Security, System, ACEEvent Log and Internet Explorer. The Application list has 1,925 events—mostly "informativeâ€. Much too big to copy. The few, important listings there only show the date "Application Errorâ€, time, category, etc. Nothing of help. You can copy an error list. Here’s what it looks like: Name Type Description Size
Application Log Application Error Records 512.0 KB
Security Log Security Audit Records 512.0 KB
System Log System Error Records 512.0 KB
ACEEventLog Log Custom Log Error Records 64.0 KB
Internet Explorer Log Custom Log Error Records --

How did you get the list you showed?

This should be of some help How to Vew and Mange Events

the sectioni "How to view event details" explains how to copy

There are no guarantees we'll find the culprit here but its a good place to start.
