Have asked everyone who 'knows' and have checked and re-checked EVERYTHING, over and over for, literally...weeks and weeks. I dread that you are going to tell me the same things, but the simple  fact is, I can't play a CD on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit system.

Everything I've 'saved' on my back-up system, plays fine. But, insert a CD into this really terrific computer, and no matter what I do (WMP is my main medium, and also have ITunes & RealPlayer), it just won't appear.

Would very much appreciate any assistance.

    Thanks.

    Data (mp3 etc) or Audio?

If audio, you are aware that there's a fly lead that connects from the CD to Audio pins on your motherboard? If relevant I'd check that first, but please read below...

I just popped a CD in my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit system and it started playing with Windows Media Player. Have you checked all your file associations to make sure MP3s are tagged to the player/program you want to use?

That's probably from 'back in the day' of IDE :)

I have a SATA drive, no 'extra' connection for sound, just the SATA cable & music CD's play fine.

It is Arie, hence my request for system details :)

We don't even know if it's audio or data (or both) yet, though re-reading the post slightly suggests it's both.

Since you only mention WMP - when you put a cd in the drive, does Autoplay come up? With any cd in the drive, can you go to programs > computer and see a label for the cd or right click on it and select play (if audio). Can you browse a cd?

I apolgise but I have no idea what an 'Audio pin' is.

I have all info about my system, but obviously wouldn't want to post the whole '43' of 'em on a public board, so what specifically should I attempt to look for with regard to assistance? (And I thought I was 'Intermediate' level ! Well, that's certainly changed since this one arrived !).

    Apologies!

Oh...you're sendiing me up ! OK!

Nope. Nothing! (I can only play all music and CD's I'd sent to my 'Back-up' Drive in WMP before my XP died in a storm...but this gorgeous new computer just refuses to recognise an inserted CD).:(

If you complete your system details we may be able to provide further assistance but I fear you're going to have to make that call.

Hi Sarah001, can you be a bit more specific regarding this Back-up drive, is that a USB drive that you have connected to your new Computer and Windows media player will play those files OK.
What is your version of WMP, what happens when you insert a data CD will that open, do you have your Optical drive set to Auto-Play.
Are the lights on the front of the DVD player flashing when you insert a CD.
If you could answer those questions that would help in determining where the problem lies.

Playing a CD on Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi hawk22, and yes my 'back-up' drive is a USB connnection. WMP plays everything ok from back-up drive CD's, and not, of course(the issue), CD's inserted into computer...and also have checked that Optical Drive is set to Auto-Play. Yes, the lights flash when I insert a CD. (Apologies...tried to find all of the posts re this so can't answer all).
AnywayI finally rang Dell 'tech', and was passed on to 'software', who looked by 'remote' and said that I needed to 'unscrew the back of the computer "... And then gave me another no. to call for more 'tech' advice about how to do this. Ummm...this is an 'all in one' thingy I have sitting here ! Ain't likely to turn it over and try to 'unscrew' ...anything ! Y'know? Scares the heck out of my person!

Apologies for replying with this kind of response...must drive you up the wall!
    Sarah001.

Hi there Sarah001, have you been making any progress with the techie's yet.
It certainly appears to be more of a hardware problem than a software, as you have pretty much covered all the software aspects.
You say the lights on the front of the Optical drive are flashing when you insert a CD therefore it is getting power, which only really leaves the data cable, or the drive is defective to start off with.

Let us know how you are getting on, and there is no need to apologize your frustration is understandable.

Thankyou for replying so quickly. Will let you know when I get the 'gump' to proceed with 'hard tech' persons...not that you will need, nor want, to know! Grin!

Thanks again for your assistance. Ever so much appreciated !
