    Hi guys,

My system has recently been crashing & I followed PeteC's advise on a previous thread & downloaded BlueScreenView & produced the following report.

No one is going to take the easy route out and say that SP3 is the cause :) How long have you been running SP3?

For the various error codes listed there are several possiblities as to the cause and they don't all point to the same cause needless to say.

I would start by checking your hard drive with the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - DOS version from a bootable CD ....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Toshiba

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

To determine the make/model no. of your hard drive download SIW and go .....

    Hardware - Storage Devices.

I would then check out the memory, noting ....

Since W95 Microsoft have indicated that ....

Defective memory chips may not be detected by memory checking tools. Some memory checking programs are not adequate tests because they do not test RAM in the same way that Windows uses RAM. Most memory checkers use read/write cycles when scanning memory. Since Windows is executing code from memory, it uses execute cycles. Execute cycles are different from read/write cycles and are more vulnerable to parity errors. It is possible for memory checking programs to find parity errors if the memory is extremely faulty

The only satisfactory way of testing RAM is to test the installed RAM in various configurations. If you have a single module swap it around the slots. If you have a pair of modules run each one singly, swapping between slots; then run them in pairs swapping between pairs of slots. If you have 2 sets of matched modules do not get them mixed up.

    Hello and Welcome !

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump and copy the files and Zip it up and upload it to Skydrive so we could know the exact cause. ntoskrnl.exe is Windows Kernel file and it's just a false positive because at the time of crash if Windows couldn't find the cause it will blame the Windows Kernel

    Hope this helps,
    Captain

Thanks guys. I have been to hell & back, pc would not boot up, I just got the BSOD telling me that my BIOS was not compatible, then it was not AHCP (?) compliant.

I will be posting my dump just shortly, but I ask this question in the meantime, could this be caused by overclocking the RAM? A utility came with the motherboard, and I clocked the RAM from 1333Mhz to 1500Mhz. The PC was running OK till I changed my mouse (have uninstalled that since I started this post). I had to reset the BIOS to default values to get machine to boot, and now, fingers crossed, it appears to be working, (hah, watch this space).

To PeteC: Thanks for your advise above. Once I got the machine up & running again, I have run the HDD diagnoses - all reported ok. I have also run the Memory checker.iso for 5.5 hours with no errors.

    dump to be posted shortly.

Crapy system drivers, out-of date security?

Also a good chance this system is infected, so start here:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Well, Arie, I am shocked at just how much you have highlighted as being out of date - but I have done as you asked, ran all the checks and listed the results in the Malware forum.

sfc - System File Checker - it does just that. Bad files are replaced from the .dll cache.

Thank you Pete. I did wonder how to 'slipstream SP3'. Gonna do that now, then run sfc.

Can I re-ask this question please? Does anyone think this may have been my problem? I have not had any more BSOD's since I stopped overclocking the RAM, so..... what do you think?

    Hi Terri,

Overclocking can be a boon or a bane — depending on your MoBo, Memory, etc., — and will cause instability in some systems. Since you reset your Memory to default levels and your 'puter is running OK now, it would appear that: 1) You might have a slightly wonky memory module; 2) You're overclocking too far; or 3) Just upping the voltage without adjusting the Cas & Ras Timings correspondingly will cause problems.

My 2¢ is that you ask how to overclock Corsair memory in a Gigabyte MoBo. I know that with certain Gigabyte MoBo's you can only set the timings in the BIOS and the voltages are fixed.

    To jpChris & PeteC:

Thanks for all the help (again) mates. I'm gonna put this one to bed and not worry my pretty little head about it anymore (well, until the next BSOD or other crash occurs!).

    Merry Christmas to all
