    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Could you post the "exact" verbiage of the error? That way when others go to GOOGLE (hint hint) they will be able to narrow down the solution.

Is there any other operating sytem on the hard drive?

Why not run SFC /SCANNOW? You may be asked for your XP CD while System File Check is running. Neil.

Neil, file system inconsistency error means problem in file/directory structure & not in file themselves. The only way to repair it is to run chkdsk /f.

Still the same ? Means what ? The chkdsk didn't start on reboot or aborted midway ?

I don't know if it already started but after the beginning there is statement that diskchecking has been cancelled.

    I'll refer you to PeteC's post #7

If you're unsure of the disk manufacturer then SIW will help you determine that, you'll find a link to SIW in the system specifications link from that same post. Completing your system specifications does help us to help you.

Instead of running chkdsk /f try chkdsk /r instead

If I find a problem running CHKDSK from within Windows, I boot to the Windows CD and run it from the Recovery Console. Also, if CHKDSK seems to "stall ", don't crash out of it, it is probably repairing something. Don't stop it unless you get an error message. I run it overnight.
