It said, "Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way ".

I called the computer shop and he said I have a virus, though Avira doesn't find it.

    Now what?

Nothing to worry about, that's your swapfile and is most certainly locked by the OS.

What application caused the original error?

This knowledgebase is worth looking through as well.

Don't know as it didn't show until I rebooted.
Is the guy at the computer shop mistaken?

The computer is running slow, which causes me to think something is going on. I discovered the error message as a result of rebooting to get the box back up to speed.

Possibly, it's all to easy to blame Virii and Malware nowadays. Read that knowledge base and follow the instructions. Let me know how you get on.

    Here's my concern...
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix

I'm wondering if it's worth it?
I tend to shy away from MS and the beta junk they throw on the public.

You are suffering from this problem and...

    You're running XP SP2

Hardly new, if this Hotfix caused problems then it would've been picked up by now.

I've shyed off of SP 3 because of problems I've read about.
Is it worth going to SP3 to deal w/ the 2nd issue?

    I'll download the hotfix now.

Yes upgrade to SP3 (if so you won't need the hotfix)

I've just read your other thread in Hardware (please don't do this it causes confusion). I can't find any information regarding acpmain.exe, can you confirm the spelling?

    EDIT:

Sorry I misspelt, still no information found on apcmain.exe but I'll keep looking.

In the meantime perhaps a visit to the malware removal board is required.

Please read this and post the logs in the Malware and Virus Removal forum. I should add that the people in that forum can be quite busy at times but I'm sure your post will be picked up by one of the experts.

It would help if you could quote or link to this thread.

**NOTE** A member of staff may move this thread to the malware removal forum, if so do not start a new thread but post the requested logs in the moved thread.

Ignore my recommendation for malware removal, install either the Hotfix/SP3 and let me know how things go.

As far as apcmain goes read this

My internet connection is slow, and it says it will take an hour to download SP3.
    I'm downloading now.

    Sounds like it's nothing really.
So I guess I won't worry about it.

Hoping SP3 will help, as th ecoputer is really dogging it.

As wildfire posted, perfectly normal. Coincidentally I ran a scan on my laptop with Avira yesterday - same message.

Thx Pete, that's good to know.
I've downloaded/installed SP3 and upon reboot received the same error message - Runtime Error, so someting else is causing this.
Also, any thoughts on why the music is suddenly distorted?

It's not that helpful to put info in one thread which you omit from another ....

    This thread .....
    The other thread ....
So the question remains - is this software installed ....
Best solve one problem at a time.

As for soound, I switched to onboard sound and it's the same, so either the files are corrupted (unlikely) or it's the speakers (which also seems unlikely - Klipsch ProMedia). Will contact shop about exchanging speakers.

What do you suggest on the error message? It just started poping up.
