All of sudden my speakers sound like crud.
I can't believe it's really the speakers, so I tried headphones, and they sounded like crud also.

What would cause the music to distort like this?

    Using iTunes, Klipsch ProMedia2.1 Speakers

Are you plugging headphones into the jack on the speakers or the soundcard (computer case). If its the one on the speakers or the speaker contoller if yours have that, then have you tried your speakers on another computer? It could be as simple as a bad jack or crimped wire.

It could also be your soundcard drivers or a new program that has taken over your default audio. What were you doing in the days leading up to this misfortune? Any new installs or updates?

    ;)

Yes, I plugged the headphones into the jack on the speaker, not the soundcard (since the card outputs are burried behind the computer).
I pulled the soundcard to try the onboard card, but am getting no sound and iTunes won't play.

Oh, and no new hardware/software changes recently.
Oh, am getting this message when I fire up...
    Microsoft visual C++ Runtime Library
    Program: C:\...apcMain.exe
Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

I just rang the computer shop and was told this means there is a virus, though Avira has not foound it (it runs ea night).
    I'm running a scan now.

Also, Vira Gaurd was not activated - that's strange.
    Not sure what this means.

    Chas,

I'd hold back on messing with your sound issues until you resolve the software one's in this thread.

Both problems may be related and as PeteC said it's better to concentrate on one problem at a time.

Thanks for that wildfire. I just read the other thread and think we should all cool our jets re: this sound issue until you resolve issues in the other thread. I jumped on this because it looked like it had gone pretty long with 0 response.

Hawk - you are right on the money but it looks like we should all wait to see what happens re: possible SP3 installation resolving things.

I'd also agree with wildfire that blindly pointing to malware with no "real" evidence is a cop out. On the other hand, AV scanners alone just don't cut it these days - unfortunately, today's malware writers are very good at their craft.

Pete - new tool needed - time lock on threads like this! :D

    ;)

    So here's the scoop guys,
The Time Lord, AKA Key Master, AKA Lord Clark (I think this one's a winner and he should only be referred to as Lord Clark from now on!) solved the problem. The Performance Centre software (which I still don't know how it came to be on my machine) was the issue. It was somehow modifying (or enhancing) my sound - in the worst of ways.

So once again, THANK YOU LORD CLARK! :)

(Can someone tell me why we don't have a thumbs up icon in the smiles box? I think that's the one icon we need that's missing.
Hmmm, I wonder if the great and powerful Lord Clark can make this happen?)
