Whoa! If I read that right, you have 2 AV programs running at the same time. That could be your problem right there. They're probably fighting each other at boot-up (which would explain why that operation takes so long), and might well be what's at least partially responsible for the slow compacting.

Try doing some research over in the AV and malware problems forum and see if you find something there that will either verify or clarify what I just said.

And also when you get a chance, delete that really old version of Jave and go HERE to download the latest version. The version you have is almost as old as I am. :D

    Bobbo & MrBill-

Deleted the old Java and a lot of old Java updates.

Deleted Ad-aware. Yes, according to their ads they now claims Anti-virus capabilities. Didn't it start out out as a simple Malware program? I've been telling people for years not to run multiple AV programs as they fight each other...and here I unwittingly did it.

I'll report if I have faster start-up and consider some of MrBills security suggestions.

    THANKS AGAIN!!!
    Carl

Yes it did start out as a spyware/malware type program. A couple of years later, lots of people stopped using it as it went down hill.

Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Disc Cleanup and put a check in ALL the boxes. Then click OK and let it clean up everything. Then go to the same place and do a Defrag. Then when it finishes, reboot.

You must have an lot of stuff starting on startup if it takes that long. If you post a DDS log, somebody can look at it and tell you what doesn't need to start on startup. Then you a program like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to disable what you don't need. DO NOT use MSCONFIG...

Darn! I was in Oregon about a month ago; you could have handed it to me in person. Thanks for the good thought.

    I'm in Wisconsin & Florida. I'll ship!

Going through MrBill's security list I tried downloading Keyscrambler. I don't use Firefox... only Seamonkey...so it wouldn't load. I guess the pay version will work. It got me interested in that area of security because I have a lot of activity. I found this Top Ten" rating of Keyloggers. I purchased #1, Zemada for 3 PC's with a CD for $47.- after 25% discount. Independent reviews of this product seem to rate it highly.

Oops! I see now it's JamesD (post #20) that's in Oregon. Better not ship. Wouldn't want the good stuff to get bruised in transit. Thanks anyway. :)

My wife was born in Wisconsin and grew up there. Obviously, some good people come from Wisconsin.

How are the boot-up and compacting times now?

I posted these right after I acted on your suggestions.

Between Wisconsin & Florida I like Wisconsin better. Florida has changed so much in the last 10 years and sunshine everyday can actually become monotonous.

I must be missing something here. How can you compact 1000 deleted e-mails? Deleted means that they are gone. Nothing should be there to compact.

Deleted mail, still, remains in the Inbox, although it is in the background. It is necessary to compact the Inbox, if you want to remove the stuff which in the background. This background, or not seen mail is there because some people want to get it back.
I don't know how much spam one can get, but I empty my Trash every time I visit my mail, so very little has to be compacted, done in seconds.
Also, all the Junk goes directly into Trash. I have eight e-mail addresses, and there is no problem getting them in line.
