xp issues

My lap-top had some virus issues so we downloaded kaspersky Internet security 2009. As soon as it was loaded, desk-top icons on my lap top went away along with the start icon. (not sure if this is the prob?) i could acsess everything by using alt+ctrl+del. started the laptop up a few days later and the icons were back, but were hollow. a few more days went by, started it up and the icons work. but computer still runs funny, really slow, sometimes icons still wont work when clicked on. Not sure if prob is memory (25.7gb free) or a virus or kaspersky. When the icons came back and they were useable, the processes for the system were around 45. When the icons are gone or do not work, the processes are around 22.
