    Hi,

I have a problem which is driving me nuts. I get random BSOD, sometimes 20 a day before I get fed up restarting. I have put new memory in, new power supply, formatted and reinstalled windows (XP PRO) several times. I'm tearing my hair out. Dumplog follows, hope you can help. Many thanks in anticipation.

    bluepeter75 - Welcome to the Board :)

Have patience until the one member of the BBS who can read these dump files chances by.

In the meantime I suggest you download the diagnostics software from the manufacturer of your hard drive and check out the drive - you seem to have done most other things.

In the mean time try making sure that all your drivers are up to date.

BUGCHECK_STR: 0xA is commonly caused by a faulty driver.

Thanks for the welcome, when I restart and send error report to Microsoft, their response varies from it being caused by unknown hardware (last night was the latest time) to 'unknown driver' to a specific driver (only a few times but a different driver each time, I've updated all the ones it mentioned and think I've checked the rest).

    The error signature is
    BCCode : 1000000a BCP1 : FFFE8080 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000001
    BCP4 : 806EE2DC OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1
    if that helps.

And one more from a month ago. To my untrained eye they all look very similar (probably caused by: ntoskrnl.exe; Bugcheck: 0xA) but if I could read them I wouldn't be posting!

Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read these and tries to help.

You are right about the cause - ntoskrnl.exe - no doubt others will give their interpretation, but I would encourage you to run chkdsk, specifically chkdsk /r and the disk diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer.

I'm off to try that now - I'll get back to you and let you know how I get on.

Ok here goes. I tried to run chkdsk /r but
"The type of the file system is FAT32.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) "

Chkdsk without the /r runs ok.

After that, I downloaded the diagnostic software from maxtor, and when I ran the quick check it said 'The drive is failing - back up all your files and exchange with us if your drive is still in warranty' or words to that effect. On subsequent runs it passed the diagnostic tests but I'm sure that's the problem now, it's just intermittent.

Oh well, Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's hard drive shopping I go!

Thanks for your help Arie and PeteC, and compliments on the site, it has taught me a lot from this and the many other threads I have read in the couple of days I have been visiting the site. I'll be checking in in future with any other problems I have!!

You should have answered Y :) chkdsk would then have run at the next boot.

You had covered most of the points noted on various hits on Google and the only real question mark pointed at the hard drive. Seems like the disk diagnostics agreed in part at least.

Good luck - let us know how it goes.

    The nightmare continues!!!

I took out my current hard drive (maxtor 120Gb) and got a 4Gb Seagate from my dad's old system. I formatted that disk and tried to install XP. While doing the DOS part of the install, several files could not be copied (cyclad-z.inf, another cycl???.???, headsp~1.wmv, minipl~1.wmv, 4 x utopia~?.wav and 3 x sv-262e1.png). I assume the wmv are windows media video, I know the wav files are sounds, and a quick google search suggests .png are image files. Could the lack of .inf files be causing all these problems? If so do I have a defective XP disk?

Anyway, the next stage of the install got so far, then bsod again, this time PAGE FAULT IN NON_PAGED AREA. So I now conclude that my hard drive was not at fault, as this other hd blue screens also.

My next step and the stage I am at now is to remove everything from the motherboard excluding the (original) hard drive, memory and processor (with fan), to see if that makes any difference. I also have my USB broadband modem plugged in, and my keyboard and mouse (USB) and monitor. I tried running chkdsk /r on reboot, it got as far as 5% then froze.

Incidentally, the processor is not overheating (55 C can handle 80 C).

If anybody can help me with this I owe them LOTS of cyber pints!!

Thanks for listening to my tales of woe.

However, if this works I should be able to pinpoint the cause but I won't hold my breath.

Your problems could be down to any number of things, including a faulty motherboard, CPU, video card, etc. You say you replaced the memory so given that it is compatible with your board that should be OK.

Your idea of a minimum build is a good one, but you will need the video card too.

Your XP installation problem could be a damaged or dirty CD or a faulty CD drive, coupled with any of the above items.

I wish you luck - I suspect you are going to need it :)

I have moved your thread to the Hardware forum with title edit.

Thanks PeteC, I have no video card in my system at the moment, I took it out a while ago when I was blaming it for my problems, I'm just using on-board video. I have just run chkdsk /r, which stalled several times but eventually ran, and found no problems. I'm going to try some things which are usually guaranteed to crash the system now, to see if it is more robust with most hardware removed.

Thanks for your patience, I'll let you know if I ever find the cause!

From the characteristic behavior and problem description you have given, it would be adviseable to check your memory.

    ;)

more: You don't say much about your system or identify anything other than HDD's you tried but bad memory or incorrect memory timings wll cause everything you have described, including the difficulty in copying files during an attempted installation.

Thanks Rockster, I'm afraid I am on my 2nd lot of memory, I started with 1 stick 512Mb DDR333. I checked this with Memtest and it checked fine. Even so, I swapped it for 2 sticks total 512 Mb DDR266 and the problems are the same.

If you want more details I have an ASRock K7S41GX Motherboard, an Athlon XP 3000+ processor and a Maxtor 120Gb Hard drive. I am still on a 'bare bones' system, with only these and my keyboard, mouse and monitor plugged in. and my AOL broadband modem.

The PC had 2 bsod today, my wife was streaming radio and when the kids went on games websites and bebo, it went bsod after about 15 mins. (Oh yeah, the wife persuaded me to plug the speakers back in). I have since removed the speakers again in case they are the cause.

I am starting to believe it may be the modem/AOL software, I think I might try plugging my dial up modem back in and removing broadband, see if that helps.

    Any suggestions?

I can't in good conscience advise you to go out and buy some decent memory because there is no way to diagnose this strictly as a memory related problem. Having said that, it should be noted that not all memory is created equal. Just because its PC 2700 or PC 2100 (DDR 333 or DDR 266) doesn't mean much - it could be good memory or it could be garbage. I've seen some very good memory that tests out fine yet is worthless re: stability on certain motherboards. Most memory available at retail is average at best. The other consideration here is that with a SIS chipset you will be better off matching your memory to your CPU and running in an auto configuration setting, so the question is - do you have a 266 Athlon or a 333? Some of the more generic CAS3 modules also run better at 2.5 on K7's.

Again, I can not say with certainty that this is a memory related set of problems you are encountering - it just has all of the characteristics based upon your earlier posts and its an area worth taking a closer look at.

    ;)

Thanks again, your knowledge goes way beyond mine. As a follow up, I have been running the PC for hours now with the 'bare bones' system, the only difference from when it bsod'd twice this afternoon is I have the speakers unplugged. I hate to tempt fate but I have tried the usual "guaranteed" ways to get it to bsod but it won't do it (YET!).

How do I do the above? I have looked in device manager and cannot see where it will tell me if it is a 266 or 333 Athlon. I can use either set of memory so this sounds like a good idea if you think it'll help.

Also "generic CAS3 modules?" "run better at 2.5?" 2.5 whats? Sorry for my ignorance, the rest made sense to me!

I am grateful for your advice.
