No, these disks were supplied by Staples Office Supplies. They are both in good condition. Any way, I'm re-installing the Disk 1 again. Maybe it hiccuped previously. Thanks so much for your help.

I'm headsing off to bed right now - I'll come back in the morning, but my gut feeling is that there is a hardware problem in the laptop, maybe a failing motherboard.

Strange that the drive apparently passed the Primary Hard Disk Self Test - was that a diagnostic tool in the computer or the diagnostic software I pointed you to?

I have asked another experienced member to take a look at this thread in the hope that a fresh mind may bring a solution, or an explanation at least.

Thanks for asking:) I missed this one when it first appeared.

My first thought is to run the manufacturers test on the hard drive as that is less likely to miss some minor glitch. We don't want to move on untill being sure that the hard drive is OK.

My other thoughts once the hard drive is given the all clear is to go for a full format on the hard drive and re-install from the recovery discs. That will erase any possible infections that could be putting a spanner in the works.

Is it possible that the recovery operation has been trying to run from the hard drive recovery partition and not from the discs? A corrupt recovery partition would cause the errors you are having.

The only other test that may be worth doing is on the memory.

Other than a slim possibility that the CD drive has read errors (might be worth running a lens cleaner) I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Good Morning...well, I put in the xp cd that came with the unit ....it showed at the beginning that all "passed" and started loading files. But when it got to the end, showed a problem with "windows\system32\config\system. But, I can't get into Dos to input this and see where it goes. Does this make sense?

I would suggest you run the hard drive diagnostics from the manufacturer before trying anything else.

This is a new problem? you cannot get into the Bios?

I would agree with markmadras on this - if you remember I suggested that many posts ago :)

I suspect you have a SATA hard drive in which case SATA drivers have to be loaded at F6 on the second screen, but you need a floppy drive to achieve this - there is another method if the drivers can be found.

I'm afraid that you must tell us the Make and Model No. of the drive if we are to proceed further.

Elaine - I asked for the Make and Model of the Hard Drive. In Post #12 I outlined the necessary steps to obtain this information ....
As I posted earlier I suspect it is a SATA hard drive drivers for which are not included on the XP CD. I need to confirm that before I spend time looking for the drivers - a task which may or may not be successful. There are ways of slipstreaming them into an XP CD so that it recognises a SATA drive

The drivers should be included in the Recovery CD, but it would appear that that is not going to play ball.

No - that is the part number of the laptop .....

    http://www.google.com/search?source...F-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_en-GBGB352GB352&q=EZ415UA#ABA

I am trying to help you, but am becoming increasingly frustrated by your lack of accurate response in respect of some questions.

I have explained more than once how to physically determine the make and model no. of the hard drive and I will do so again .....

To determine the make/model no. of your hard drive you will need to remove the hard drive cover on the base of the laptop as shown on Page 5-7 of the manual (page 93 in Reader) - hopefully the drive will show the make & model no. on the upper face so that there is no need to remove the drive - as shown on the next page. It is a very straightforward operation.

If you feel that this is getting beyond you then I suggest you take the laptop to the nearest computer repair shop.
