This is funny, I do not see the process (running) any more! I haven't seen it for days. So there's not much sense in shutting it down now. It won't prove anything.

    Doucette,

Chaeck for it right after boot up, I suspect it will be there. It disappears after a short period of time.

    Regards - Charles

As far as I can tell, the process only runs when I reboot the computer and when I visit Windows Update.

How long does the process remain running for upon reboot? It's been on for about five minutes now. Does it stay running forever? [EDIT: The process did eventually shut down, after about five to ten minutes.] It is the one in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe ". (I could tell because I was not allowed to delete it while it was running.)

Ok Doucette, you can pretty much lay to rest that this is the malware process you were wondering about.

And will startup even if you disable AU thru the Control Panel. Disabling the AU service keeps it from starting up altogether.

    wuauclt.exe BUGS ME

Hey, guys. I am having trouble with this little bugger, too. Mine seems different than all of yours, though.

I am running XP Home on an Athlon 3200+.

I was seeing the hourglass come onto my cursor about every fifteen seconds or so, and seeing CPU activity jump to 20-25% during that time. No internet usage, as far as I can tell, just CPU.

So I watched to see what application was causing this and it is, of course, wuauclt.exe.

The file resides in the Windows/system32 folder on my machine, so that's the right place to make it a legit file, I believe. I have scanned with the latest definitions from Norton and with the updated Ad-Aware software and both come up clean, so I am pretty sure it's the legit windows updater.

How the HECK to I make it stop coming on so often? It's REALLY slowing things down on my machine.

BTW -- I turned it off in services and it stopped doing it, at least for now. And I tried the windows update thing and got the message that Matt's website said I should. So again, I'm sure it's the valid process...I just need it to be LESS FREQUENT!

    Thanks!

Yeah, I read that thread, Johanna, and I am NOT comfortable having AU turned off. But right now, that's my only option if I want to use my comp. The AU taking up 25% of CPU resources every 15 seconds was killing me.

Even with it on, Windows was NOT letting me update from the MS update site. It was saying I didn't have permissions. So I suspect I'll just take it to the geeks and let them fix things up right.

    THanks.
