Windows XP Media Center, 3 gigs of ram. Plenty of free space on HD. Got the PC and when you turned it on, it would boot to a normal Windows screen and you would have to click on a user (never was one before) and there is no password. It acts like it is going to boot into Windows, but doesn't and comes back to the same screen. I shut it down normally. I then booted into Safe Mode with Networking and downloaded MalwareBytes which found Security 2010 which is one of those rogue programs that runs and wants you to buy it to fix it. I managed to get that off with MBAM. Shut the PC down and went to the Normal Mode. Now the only way you can shut it off is to pull the power cord or hold the power button down till it shuts off. It doesn't matter if you choose Shut Down or Restart. I find no traces of Seurity 2010 on the machine at all. Everything else works just fine except the shut down part. Any ideas? Spybot didn't find anything but a couple of tracking cookies. AV found nothing at all.

    Hi Bill,

Did you ask for assistance from the malware specialists when removing Security 2010?

If not Please read this and post requested logs in the Malware and virus removal board.

    NOTES:
When posting the logs ensure word wrap is switched off (in notepad Uncheck Format->Word Wrap) as this makes them difficult to read.

Be aware that only Malware analysts will advise and they are often busy. Your post will be taken on a first come first served basis but it may take a while before you receive a reply.

Include a link to this thread if you can.

If you have already done the above follow microsoft's instructions for "Advanced troubleshooting for shutdown problems in windows XP ", please let us know how you get on.

I'd suggest you do, you could always come back to this thread if you get the all clear but in my experience where one malware sneaks in others usually follow.
