Ok, I have this computer which was brought to me because "it won't run ". They dropped it off at the house and that's all the info they left with my wife.

So I bring it to my workroom and plug it and turn it on. It comes up to the Black XP splash screen and churns away for a while, so I think "well it's going to start up ". Finally that screen goes away (turns black nothing on screen) and right before the Blue logon screen pops up the machine reboots itself and will repeat the scenario over and over (if you let it).

So my next step was to bring it up in safe mode. Sure enough it will come up and run fine in safe mode. So I installed the new version of Malwarebytes and run it.....nothing. I install Ccleaner and run it, use it to check start-up programs and disable most...still no good. I install the latest version of AVG free and run a scan...nothing found. I check the event log and find Errors "Service Control Manager event 7026 and 7001" (multiple times) "DCOM event 10005" (multiple times) and also a DHCP error. After a quick check from a google search those errors tend to be tied to a Blaster worm. So I download and run a scan of Microsoft MSERT. This scan also found nothing.

I have done a restore back 3 weeks still same conditions occur. I'm pretty sure one of the drivers trying to load is causing my issue, but how do I narrow it down?

Oh another funny thing I've noticed is at first the mouse (PS2) didn't work, so I plugged in a USB. After this restore, the USB mouse wouldn't work, but the PS2 did. Maybe a different problem, maybe related.....

Thank you for your help, in advance.

Start in safe mode and use Device Manage to uninstall obvious hardware, i.e. video, audio, nic, etc. & reboot.

However, it sounds more like there is a rootkit infection which won't be detected by standard av or antimalware apps. (rootkits load as a driver)

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Thanks for the info. I've talked to the owner and we've decided to just format the drive and start over.
