When you use a three prong to two prong adapter, there is a little tab with a hole in it at the bottom of the adapter. The purpose of this is to "adapt" the ungrounded outlet into a grounded one. To do this, undo the *****(see 1 below) that holds the coverplate over the outlet, plug in the adapter, put the ***** back in, routing it through that little hole and tighten it down securely.

This takes the ground leg from the three wire plug to the outlet box. If the outlet box is grounded, your wiring fault light shoud go out and you and your system will be safer. The purpose of the ground wire is to provide another path for the current to get back to the source if the neutral leg of the circuit gets shorted out. It is sort of a fail safe mechanisim.

If the box is not grounded, that is another story.

The cost of a grounded outlet is probably 79 cents at your local hardware store. The cost is in the installation. If the oulet box is not grounded you are looking at running a new two wire plus ground cable to the electrical panel box. How much work that will take depends on a lot of factors, distance, intervening walls and floors, etc. How much labor to run the new line will determine the cost if you hire an electrician. If you do, make sure he has a license for the jurisdiction you are in.

(1)I guess I have to say that little fastener with the slot in the top that you remove by inserting a screwdriver and turning counter clockwise.
