Linksys router wireless & hardwired. New NICs. Two wireless cards for the laptops and a 8 port switch. Cable to the router-router to the switch-switch to every hardwired computer.
Three days moving boxes, r&r-ing NICs, updating drivers for everything and...and...
It all works!!! You wizards were right about, well, everything. And the money was well spent. Ah, the joys of connection. Now I can stroll around the house (and yard) with the XP laptop and do anything I need to do. Two things-you all have my eternal gratitude and I have no desire to mislead anyone. My time in 'Nam was spent in a unit known as "Forces in Volunteer Service-Republic of Vietnam (FIVS-for short); not in the US Military. We only "went hot" in North Vietnam and its neighbors. I have a tremendous respect for anyone who "volunteered" for the lovely "all expenses paid SE Asia hunting trip" and want to avoid any disrespect for those who did. Enough!
Again, my thanks and I'll be around-I promise.

Congrats Six. I know how you feel. It's nice when it all comes together, finally. Now you have a hardware firewall to provide you with a measure of peace and security. But don't forget (I'm sure you didn't) to keep up with anti-virus and zone-alarm (or a flavour of your choice, but I think you were using za b4).

I have 2 machines: a dual-boot WinXP/Win98se and a Win98se using LinkSys 10/100 Ethernet adapters. I use TCP/IP with static private IP numbers. I set the dual boot machine (booted into WinXP) to 192.168.0.1 and the Win98se machine to 192.168.0.2. I set all the default gateways to 192.168.0.1. They network just fine (tho it wasn't always so).

Check the numbers that your Win98 computers are using by going to Start>Run>then type winipcfg. On the XP machine go to Start>Run>Cmd.exe and then type ipconfig

All machines must be part of the same Workgroup. On the 98 machines check the Identification tab and the Setup Wizard will allow you to type in your Workgroup on the XP box

    Luck

    Romancier,
Thanks for the info. The guys set me straight on the network a couple of weeks ago and mine is up and running like a top now. I did have to go to the linksys wireless and a switch but it all works just fine now. Anyway, thanks.
