    Some application like a Windows Update - or you're using the same anti virus software etc could be the culprit.

    I'm using Word and Excel 2000 on a virtual XP within Win 7 and it still works ok...

    I have long suspected an update. Probably not a security issue, I use Vipre, the other two use Avast and the MS package.

    Interesting that you don't have a problem - would an update affect a version running in a virtual OS?

    Sorry.... I started to mention that I don't do updates on the VM... I do use the VM all day long but for only one specific task.
