    Hi All
In a bit of pickle with Adobe/IE 6 running on Windows XP. When trying to open a link (no dodgy websites, just NHS policies and guidelines) download window appears asking if want to save doc. After clicking ok (no other option) the file is downloaded in an unrecognisable format. Was wondering if anyone else had similar and what to do. Thank you in advance for all help!

Bad download of Adobe would be my guess. Uninstall it and re download it. While you are at it, you really need to update IE to Ver. 8 as you are a couple of years behind on this version. Lots of venerabilities in it.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS.
I would ask if you have XP SP3?
Could you please take the time to enter your "System Details" as this helps us to help you. Click on UserCP to enter your info and don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the page and 'SAVE' before you close the page.

Keeping up to date with all software with generally avoid odd problems. Neil.

ps. Have a look under MY SYSTEM in mine and Mr.Bill's Profile. This will give you an idea of what is necessary.

The files you want to download are on Websites using Microsoft's ASP framework. (Active Server Pages).

    For example, at this site:
http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/About/FreedomOfInformation/FOIPublicationScheme/OurPoliciesAndProcedures there are links to PDF documents. But these PDFs are served using an ASP "feeder application ". Here's an example of one of the links:
    nhsdirect.nhs.uk/About/FreedomOfInformation/FOIPublicationScheme/~/media/Files/FreedomOfInformationDocuments/OurPoliciesAndProcedures/Policy-Documents-Aug2012/20120723NHSDirectConfidentialityPolicy.ashx

The .ashx is the "feeder" application that serves out the PDF files.

In order to have Adobe Reader run automatically and open the files, you will need to upgrade Internet Explorer and upgrade Adobe Reader to at least version 8 or 9, or more.

However, as a work-around, you can right click on the link and select "Save target as..." and you'll download the .ashx file, then rename the file to .pdf and open with Adobe.
