No I did not make changes. There was no reason to.

I have emailed MS Help and Support for Windows Update. My "Incident" has been "accepted" for action. So far the response has been that the problem needs to be bumped to a "Windows Update Support Professional ". I guess that is progress.

    I've heard from a friend who two days ago put W98SE onto a new PC;
he's been to the Windows Update site, I asked him to let me know how he got on when revisiting WU - anyway, his approach had been to put a few patches, then go back for some more... so he's made quite a few visits.
His answer: "it all worked perfectly ".

The only other "known issue" I've turned up is mention that this behaviour can be caused by PC clock set incorrectly; it seems this impacts SSL, the Windows Update uses SSL somehow.

    Welshjim,
good luck with your "incident "... surely a valid issue as at the moment it is giving out false "clean bills of health "...

...consider people who have just signed up with a new ISP, for example. They get their IE from the signup CD, install it all - and the first thing which happens is that IE looks to the Windows Update site for a scan.** And of course, these are ones which really need patching.

    best wishes, HJ.

** these URLs are slightly different & I've saved a couple of them ;)
will give it a go but not for a few hours - gotta do some work sometime :(

For what ever it is worth the problem started about the same time I installed the latest MS patch for IE
MS03-048 - Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer (824145)
That does not mean it is the problem, but just another bit of info.

Hugh Jarss--Thanks for your comments. But your friend has Win98SE so perhaps this is only further evidence the problem is Win98FE.

    Hi all,

I am using 98FE and had the same symptoms that WelshJim stated in this thread. I tried several times with no avail. I tried again just before I posted this and everything was ok. I had access to the updates after I went through the scan just as I always did before.

I've downloaded the patch for IE, MS03-048 but haven't installed it yet, so that shouldn't have anything to do with your problem WelshJim, unless you still can't access the site.

The only thing I can guess at is that maybe too many people were trying to access WU at the same time and FEers were the last to have access. I thought maybe WU was having problems but with all the SEers not having problems that ruled that out.

Of course, with Microsoft, who knows???

nice one dopey, it's back to normal for me as well - which puts it in the last four hours or so 'coz I tried earlier too.

Welshjim, you might have got it fixed for all of us? just a thought...

    very best wishes all, HJ.

Yes, I am pleased to report that Windows Update is working again for me, as well.
I will take all the credit I can get and/or you can send a donation to my PayPal account. :)

You probably won't hear a thing from the WinUp Tech team. They don't like to admit they oopsed. I don't know why, they make a living at it....:)

Glad to hear its back in order now though.

neil--Sorry to hear that. It's disappointing. Most others with whom I am in contact, say the problem has disappeared, just as mysteriously as it occurred.
Perhaps you should contact MS (free) from the Windows Update site by clicking on Help and Support on the left panel.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/support.asp? (assuming you can reach that!)

    neil--Have a look here
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326253
This, in fact, is not exactly the problem I had. In my case only the button for "Windows" in the left panel's was inactive. All other left panel buttons were active. Do not know if all your buttons are inactive or if you have the same problem I did.

    Jim;
all of buttons in left column seem to be active:
According to my history, the last download was august 2003,
"cumulative patch for internet explorer 6 service pack 1 (822925) ".
    How many am I missing?

    Neil--
I hope that means all is OK now??
If indeed all buttons in the Windows Update left panel are active, you can click on Update Catalog and be directed to a list of all the recent updates. There have been several since August.
    Or else go here
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/
Don't panic when you first click on that link. It looks like you are going to run a Windows Update scan, but actually it eventually brings you to a page from which you can click to access updates.
P.S. In my case, if I have installed an Update from another source, like directly from a MS Security Bulletin, my windows update.log does not indicate installation. A more reliable way to check on whether you have an update is to run qfecheck.exe. Also many of the bulletins announcing/describing updates tell you how to check if you have correctly installed it--usually by checking the dates of certain files.
