I think sfc /scannow made the difference.

Well, shoot. I thought things were OK , but every since July 9 ( MS patch day) XP keeps telling me to install the same just released updates over and over again.

    Ugh.

    Followup...

I tried a suggestion via web search, and it said to stop automatic updates service and then disable it. Next, it said to go to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and delete everything inside the folder.

Then navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything in that folder too.

The next step was to go back to computer services and restart automatic updates and set it to start automatically.

So far, ever since I did that I have not been bothered with reinstalling the same updates again...with the exception of Internet Explorer 8.

Belarc Advisor and Secunia PSI are telling me that all is OK, but I'll know more on the next MS patch day. I think I am going to mark this thread as resolved for now. Thanks for all the input. :)
